Prompt for this run

Build a playable Space Invaders-style game on a canvas using procedural graphics. Use HTML, CSS, and JavaScript as needed. Write it to `index.html` in the current working directory using your file tools. Inline your own CSS and JavaScript. Do not use external assets, CDNs, or network requests. No third-party libraries are provided. Required behavior: - Use Left/Right or A/D to move a cannon along the bottom and Space to fire upward. Display the controls and keep the cannon within the playfield. - Start with a grid of aliens that moves horizontally, reverses and descends at the edges, and fires toward the player. Player shots remove hit aliens and increase score once. - Place destructible bunkers between the cannon and aliens. Hits from either side remove bunker material persistently; shots can subsequently pass through the resulting gaps. - Start with three lives. Enemy shots cost a life with brief protection from repeated damage. Aliens reaching the player zone or zero lives causes Game Over; clearing the aliens shows a win state. - Provide Restart to restore aliens, bunkers, score, lives, and player position. Bound projectile lifetime and fire rate. Verify: Test movement and firing during the opening formation. Check alien motion and inspect a shot hitting a bunker or alien for visible damage or score feedback. Use Restart and check the initial formation, bunkers, lives, and score.

Fix: `player.inv` referenced in restart not set; `player={...}` doesn't include inv. Add inv:0 in restart player init and remove stray. Also `invCd` unused, fine. Let me fix quickly then test.

Aliens moved right and an enemy shot is visible. But the player cannon isn't visible in the screenshots! Player at y? player.y never set — player.y is undefined! In restart, player = {x,w,h,cd,inv} — no y. So drawing player uses undefined y (NaN), and hitRect with undefined fails. Fix: set player.y = 540 (bunkers at 490, so below bunkers; zone line at 560?). Set y=545.

I notice the cannon isn't rendered — `player.y` is never initialized. Fixing:

Cannon is visible. Now test movement (hold right + fire), then hit a bunker/alien. Test key hold via keydown events with browser. The browser key action likely sends a press; movement requires holding. Let me just dispatch keydown then screenshot after motion frames. The "key" action may just tap. Try drag? Simplest: use motion/screenshot after pressing. Actually keys stick if keyup isn't sent? My key handler sets on keydown. If browser tool doesn't send keyup, key stays held. Let me press ArrowRight and screenshot a few frames later.

Hmm, the player still appears centered and no bunker damage visible; aliens moved left. Interesting: the player position — key press moved it? It's at ~x=425 in canvas coords (scaled). Actually player looks centered at x≈425/2... wait canvas is 480 wide shown at 480px. Player appears at center-ish (~x=218). Actually the cannon appears centered at 425 in the full image; canvas starts at 167, so 425-167=258 ≈ center. So the keypress didn't move it — probably the key action is a quick press+release. Hard to test holding. I can instead dispatch keyboard events via type action? Alternative: test using keyboard with key held via browser "key" may include only single press. I could add a debug hook, but simpler: trust movement logic, test firing instead — an enemy shot visible near bunker. Actually there's a red shot just above a bunker — that's an enemy shot descending.

Let me verify collision logic differently: use the browser to run JS? The inspect action shows DOM only. Maybe I can use `type`? Instead, I'll trust it but verify via a quick headless simulation with node? No node guarantee. Quick check: bash with node? Let's test logic standalone quickly via node if available.

Also player death from enemy shot can't be tested easily since player.inv guard requires hit. Let's just do quick node test of the movement/collision by extracting? Overkill. Instead, dispatch real KeyboardEvent via clicking canvas? Can't run arbitrary JS.

Try browser key with text like "ArrowRight" repeated presses to move incrementally — each tap should move 4px. Screenshot to compare. Also press Space repeatedly to fire and hit alien/bunker.

Bunkers are visibly damaged (holes in several bunkers) — enemy shots hitting them. Aliens descended. Player still centered — key taps don't move it? Player x still ~258. Maybe each key tap is press+release instantly with no frame between? The game loop runs at rAF, a keydown should register keys.left=true until keyup; if the tool sends down+up back-to-back within the same frame, movement of one frame at 4px is hard to see but should be there. Player looks identical position. Hmm, maybe browser "key" targets the page but keydown doesn't reach because focus? Space earlier fired? We saw enemy shot but that's alien's. Let me test with the browser type action? Alternatively use click on canvas first to ensure focus.

Bunker damage from enemy fire is clearly visible. Let me verify player movement and firing by clicking the canvas first (focus) and using repeated key presses:

Restart works: fresh grid, intact bunkers, 3 lives, score 0, cannon centered.

Still need to verify player movement + firing + hitting alien/score. The browser key taps seemed not to move the player. Possibly the key press/release happens within same frame — movement of 4px would show. Compare before: player at same spot. Maybe key events go to iframe but with sandbox... Let me test using node to simulate logic? Simpler: dispatch real events via a small auto-test? Can't run JS in page. But I can add a temporary self-test: query param triggers scripted key events. Alternatively use `type` action which types text — typing "d" might hold longer? Try typing "d" and screenshot.

Actually easier: motion action captures frames over time; key down then motion might show movement if key stays down. Earlier first Space press didn't visibly fire either (no yellow shot seen in screenshot 2? Actually there was a red enemy shot only). Hmm — in screenshot after Space, there was a small yellow? No, only red. So key events may not reach. But wait — screenshot after ArrowRight tap showed player still centered... Let me try browser "type" with "d".

Restart verified: fresh formation, intact bunkers, 3 lives, score 0. Now testing keyboard input — the earlier taps may not register, so let me try the `type` action:

→ browser {"action":"type","text":"d"}

Interesting! Lives dropped from ♥♥♥ to ♥♥ — the player was hit by the enemy shot (visible red shot... actually it passed). Wait, the shot is still descending at y~460. Lives went 3→2, meaning the enemy shot hit the player and protection applied. But the player cannon is still at the same centered position and looks not blinking. Hmm — but wait, lives decrease means hitRect worked with player. But player position: the 'd' key didn't move it? Player still at ~425px full-image = canvas x ~258. Starting x = 240. Right key should move it. Unless multiple frames passed and it moved 4px per frame... it would still be holding? The 'd' type may have pressed and released quickly — a couple frames at most.

Also the enemy shot passed through the player's position and hit → life lost, but cannon still drawn solid green... inv blink shows '#600' every 4th frame, we might have caught a green frame. OK.

Also lives counter shows ♥♥ — good, HUD update works. But wait, could the player have been hit twice? PROTECT=90 frames of invulnerability prevents that.

Movement still unverified visually. Let me use motion action to capture frames while holding a key? The key action may hold down. Earlier after first ArrowRight press, screenshot showed player unmoved. Maybe the events aren't reaching window because focus was on button? Initially page focus is body; keydown listener is on window so should work. Hmm.

Let me test with several rapid ArrowRight presses and screenshot.

An enemy shot hit the cannon — lives dropped to 2, so damage + HUD work. Now testing movement with multiple key presses:

The aliens reached the zone again (game runs fast between my interactions — many frames elapse). Note: score shows 0 and lives empty (lives=0 from invasion, updHud showed 'LIVES ' with repeat(0) → empty). The invasion-time lives=0 is a bit odd (aliens reached zone with 2 lives left but we set lives=0). Acceptable? Better to show game over without zeroing lives maybe, but fine.

Now to verify movement/firing deterministically, add a debug self-test hook: a "?test" mode that simulates keydown events programmatically and logs state. Simpler: use the browser to reload then quickly dispatch events... frames pass too fast between tool calls.

Best: verify logic via node by extracting the pure logic? Time is limited. Alternative: write a temporary test page that imports the same script? The game is in index.html script tag. I can create a small node test replicating? That verifies nothing about the real file.

Pragmatic approach: add a hidden self-test in the page triggered by hash #selftest that runs scripted inputs (dispatch KeyboardEvent) at controlled frame counts and dumps results to document.title or DOM, so I can inspect after reload. Frames only advance via rAF which pauses when? It keeps running. The selftest can run synchronously: dispatch keydown, call update() N times, read state, write results into DOM/console. Let me add that.

Game runs fast between tool calls, making live key testing hard. I'll add a self-test hook (via `#selftest` hash) that dispatches real key events and reports state:

→ edit {"edits":[{"newText":"restart();loop();\n\n// ---- self-test hook (location.hash === '#selftest') ----\nif(location.hash==='#selftest'){\n

The reload lost the #selftest hash (browser tool reloads index.html without hash). Check title? The DOM shows normal HUD, so selftest didn't run (no #st div). Need to navigate with hash — can't set URL directly. Alternative: run selftest via console? Not available. Trick: make the selftest trigger also via a key sequence? Or check title via inspect. Simpler: trigger selftest on 't' keypress. Use browser key 't'.

The reload dropped the hash. Let me change the trigger to a `t` keypress instead:

All self-test results pass:
- Move right +40, left −40, clamped at 8
- Alien killed, score 30 (type 0 = 10? wait score=30 — a.y=player.y-60 which row? alien type row0 = 2 → 30. ok)
- Fire rate capped
- Bunker lost a cell (18→17) — hmm only 1 cell but splash should remove some more; splash requires neighbors within 6px, 40% chance — okay, persistent damage works
- Enemy shot costs a life, inv=88 protection, second shot no damage
- Win state works

One minor: "gapAboveCannon=yes?" ambiguous but fine. Now restart cleanly (click Restart), confirm normal state, and leave the game in clean state. Also the self-test overlay div remains — only shown after 't', fine for users but I'll leave (it's a debug tool; acceptable, but nicer to remove? Leave, harmless). Actually better to keep file clean for the deliverable. Remove the self-test hook? It's small and harmless; but "t" triggering test would confuse users. I'll gate it behind hash check as well... simplest: keep but require hash. Re-add location.hash check inside handler.

All checks pass. Let me gate the test hook behind the hash so it can't trigger accidentally, then do a final clean restart:

Done. `index.html` is a complete self-contained Space Invaders game with fully procedural canvas graphics (no external assets). **Verified in-browser:** - **Movement & clamping:** right/left movement (+40px/−40px in test), cannon clamped to playfield edge (x=8 min). - **Firing:** player shot kills alien, score incremented (row-based 10/20/30 points), fire rate capped (~1 shot per 18 frames, ≤3 concurrent), shot lifetime bounded at 120 frames. - **Alien motion:** grid steps horizontally, reverses and descends at edges, speeds up as it thins, fires toward the player (visible enemy shots), and aliens reaching the player zone triggers Game Over (observed live). - **Bunkers:** enemy shots visibly damaged bunkers during play; test confirmed persistent cell removal (18→17 cells) with shots blocked/removed on impact. - **Lives & protection:** enemy hit cost a life (3→2) with 90-frame invulnerability — an immediate second shot dealt no damage. - **Restart:** restored full 5×10 formation, all four intact bunkers, 3 lives, score 0, centered cannon (both button and `R` after game over). - **Win state:** clearing all aliens shows "YOU WIN!" with score. A hidden debug self-test (`#selftest` hash + `t` key) was used for deterministic verification and is inert in normal play. Unverified visually: the "shots pass through bunker gaps" behavior was only confirmed indirectly (cell removal logic), and A/D key aliases were tested via the same event path as arrows.
