I will build a playable piano keyboard using Tone.js.

The piano will span C4 to C5 with computer keys mapped to A through K. Each key will use an ADSR envelope and highlight on press. I must prevent keyboard auto-repeat from spawning duplicate sustained voices.

I will use Tone.PolySynth with a Synth voice and an ADSR envelope. The computer-key mapping will be displayed on the page. Audio activation requires a user gesture.

Tone will be started via `await Tone.start()` on the first user gesture. The layout will use eight white keys and five black keys. Key presses will be handled by pointerdown and keyup events, with keydown repeats ignored to prevent duplicate voices.

Pointerup will release the note regardless of where the cursor is, including outside the key or window. This matches standard piano behavior.

Window blur will release all held voices. Pointer events will be tracked globally so dragging from one key to another does not interrupt the note.

Planning the piano keyboard design.

Tone.PolySynth supports 32 voices, so multiple notes are safe. Reference counting will prevent duplicate sustained voices from keyboard auto-repeat or overlapping mouse and keyboard input. The implementation plan starts with a notes array mapping each key to its note name and color.

Key labels will use uppercase letters. Keyboard input will normalize to lowercase for reliable matching. The synthesizer will use a triangle oscillator with a custom envelope and a polyphony limit of eight voices.

A gain node will scale output to 0.6 before routing to the destination. The hold map tracks which source—keyboard or pointer—is currently pressing each note. If a note is already held by that source, the attack is skipped to avoid duplicate voices.

The noteOff function removes a source from the hold set and releases the voice only when no sources remain. A releaseAll helper clears every active note at once. Pointer events will use pointerdown to start notes and setPointerCapture so that pointerup fires even if the mouse leaves the key or window.

Window-level pointerup and pointercancel listeners will release notes when the pointer leaves the keyboard. Dragging from one key to another without releasing will not switch notes; each press starts its own voice.

Pointer events will use `pointerId` as the source identifier so multi-touch can play multiple notes simultaneously. The pointer-down handler will call `preventDefault`, capture the pointer, and trigger audio activation.

Pointer events will use a source identifier of `ptr:` plus the pointer ID. The element-level pointerup listener releases the note, while the window-level listener catches any remaining notes if the pointer leaves the keyboard. Both paths are idempotent.

A blur listener on the window and a visibilitychange handler on the document will release all active notes when the page loses focus or becomes hidden.

A keyMap object will translate computer keys to note names. The keyboard input handler will ignore modifier keys and repeat events, then trigger audio activation and note-on when a valid key is pressed and note-off on release. A banner prompting the user to click or press a key to enable sound will appear until Tone.start() resolves.

Tone.start() returns a promise and must run inside the user gesture. The plan is to call it once and set an `audioReady` flag so that triggerAttack can fire immediately afterward without awaiting again, preventing the first note from being missed.

To prevent a stuck note when the user releases a key before `Tone.start()` resolves, the audio activation will be cached in a single promise. The plan is to mark note intent first, then await that cached promise so the voice starts only after audio is ready.

The audio activation will be non-blocking. The note intent is recorded before awaiting `Tone.start()`, and the voice only starts if the key is still held when the promise resolves. The keyboard will use a dark concert-piano aesthetic with wood and gold accents.

The layout will include a header, audio status indicator, piano keyboard, and computer-key mapping legend. White keys will measure 64 by 240 pixels and black keys 40 by 150 pixels, positioned absolutely over the white keys. The eight white keys span C through C, with black keys placed slightly left of each boundary.

The markup will use div elements with data-note attributes for each key. Black keys will be positioned at fixed percentages over the white keys: 12.5%, 25%, 50%, 62.5%, and 75% from the left edge. A CSS active class will apply a brighter color, inset shadow, and slight upward shift to indicate pressed keys. Note labels will appear on both black and white keys.

The computer-key mapping will be shown in a legend below the keyboard. The script tag for tone.min.js must load before the inline application code so the global `Tone` object is available. Some browsers may require a click to resume the audio context, so relying solely on keydown might not always work.

An overlay will prompt the user to click if the audio context does not start from a keyboard gesture alone. Chrome typically treats keydown as a valid user gesture for resuming audio, so both methods will be attempted. The pointerleave event is intentionally ignored; notes only release when the pointer is lifted outside the key or the window loses focus.

Confirmed PolySynth is available. Now writing the index.html file.

Checking Tone.js PolySynth envelope and oscillator settings.

Settled on a warm Synth voice with a lowpass filter and reduced volume. The piano layout will be centered and responsive within a 1200x800 viewport.

White keys will be about 70 pixels wide. Black keys will sit above white keys so they receive clicks. Labels will appear on the white keys and a small strip on the black keys. The computer key mapping will be shown prominently below the piano. An audio gate overlay will block sound until the first successful Tone.start(). A held-intent press-and-release system using an active sources map is being implemented.

Press and release handlers now use the active sources map. A source releases any held note before taking a new one. Notes trigger attack or release only when their count reaches one or zero, and highlighting updates accordingly.

Added a `countNote` helper to tally active voices per note. The audio gate now uses an `armAudio` function that calls `Tone.start()` on the first user gesture, sets `audioReady`, and triggers any notes still held before the engine initialized.

The audio arm function now catches start errors and clears the pending promise. A race condition between release and engine initialization is handled: if a key is released before the engine starts, it simply won't attack; if it stays held, the note will trigger once the engine initializes.

A race condition was found where a key release could occur after audioReady is set but before the engine's initialization loop finishes. This would trigger a release that fires before the attack, leaving the note stuck. To fix this, a `sounding` Set is being introduced to track which notes are currently active. A `startVoice` helper will only trigger an attack if the note is not already in the sounding set, and a matching `stopVoice` helper will handle releases.

A `syncVoices` function now reconciles the active sources map against the `sounding` set after every press or release, and again once audio is ready. It starts voices for notes still held and stops any voices that are no longer requested. JavaScript's single-threaded execution prevents event handlers from interleaving mid-function, so this synchronization is race-safe.

A blur handler will release all active keys if the window loses focus. Keyboard repeat is blocked by checking `e.repeat` and skipping presses when a source already holds a note. Pointer events outside the window or on release will also clear the held key.

Pointer events will be captured at the window level to handle releases that occur outside the browser window. A radial glow effect is being added to the deep ink background.

Finalized the color palette. Wood rails will be #3a2418, white keys will be ivory with a gold edge when active, and black keys will be #1a1c22 with blue or amber accents. The title will use system-ui and Georgia. A small voice counter will show how many notes are currently sounding. Keys will use divs with pointer events rather than buttons to avoid focus issues.

Text selection will be disabled to prevent accidental highlighting. Each key will display both its note name and its computer key label. The full chromatic sequence spans C4 through C5, using the computer keys A, W, S, E, D, F, T, G, Y, H, U, J, and K.

A visual keyboard hint row will be added below the piano. The browser tool's key action schema is being checked to confirm how to simulate computer-key presses. Console output will be inspected during verification. Release-time behavior will be validated by checking element classes rather than listening for sound.

Console logging will be minimal to avoid debug spam. A status indicator will show "Audio on" once the engine initializes. Live ADSR sliders will let users adjust envelope parameters in real time.

PolySynth will use an onsilence callback to release voices after notes end.

Duplicate note triggers are prevented. Release logic finds the first unreleased voice for a matching MIDI note. A volume limiter will be added to prevent clipping.

The synth will connect directly to the destination with a volume of -6. The piano layout is being planned for the viewport, with padding and header space set.

The piano will be centered at roughly x=312 to 888 with white keys 260px tall. Exact coordinates will be verified via DOM inspection after load. The script tag will reference the exact filename tone.min.js.

Div elements will serve as the piano keys. A `.is-on` class will handle press highlighting. Pointer events will arm audio on press and release notes on pointerup or pointercancel. The behavior for switching notes while dragging across keys is still being considered.

Pointer events will not switch notes while dragging across keys. The original note stays active until pointerup.

A window blur listener will release all active voices if the page loses focus. The keyboard mapping legend will remain visible without interaction.

The active key state will use a visible gold glow and a pressed-down appearance. Black keys will show a brighter gold top when active. Default space and tab behavior will be prevented. The console will be checked after audio activation for errors.

A waveform analyser will be added to the synth chain to provide a visual confirmation of audio synthesis.

A simple "notes sounding" readout will suffice for audio verification, so a waveform canvas meter is unnecessary. The initial audio activation banner will be non-blocking so piano keys remain clickable immediately.

A status pill will prompt the user to press any key or click the keyboard to start audio. The piano markup will use separate `.whites` and `.blacks` containers, with black keys positioned via percentage offsets.

White keys will use flex equal width. Black keys will overlay absolutely at 7.2% of the container width, positioned with calc offsets to align with C# and F#. Each key element will contain a note label and a computer-key mapping label.

Black key labels will be smaller than white ones. Mapping chips will highlight when their note is held, toggled by the same class. Data attributes will be added for testing. The release envelope will last 0.45 seconds with a 0.01 second attack and 0.18 second decay. A triangle or fat oscillator waveform will be used.

Tone.AMSynth is being considered for richer sound, with harmonicity set to 2 and envelope parameters tuned. The standard triangle oscillator remains the fallback.

Standard Tone.Synth will be used instead of AMSynth for reliability. Reverb is being skipped to avoid async convolution delays. The file will be written as a single self-contained HTML artifact with tone.min.js loaded via a local script tag.

Keyboard input handling will check both `e.code` and `e.key` to reliably map computer keys to piano notes. The source identifier will use `e.code` so keydown and keyup events match correctly.

Pointer events will call preventDefault to stop focus shifts, text selection, and unwanted dragging. Auto-repeated keydowns will be ignored.

I'll build a self-contained piano page on Tone.js with a chromatic C4–C5 keyboard, computer-key mapping, and press/release voice handling.

The piano looks good visually. A CSP worker error from Tone.js is likely caused by the library trying to create a worker for its clock.

Audio synthesis might still function without workers. AudioContext warnings are expected before a user gesture. I will click a key to verify audio and highlighting. The piano keys span roughly x=178 to x=1020 and y=175 to y=430.

C4 is the first white key near x=230, y=350. C#4 is a black key near x=270, y=250. The worker CSP error likely breaks Tone.Transport but should not prevent basic PolySynth triggerAttack. I will click to verify audio and highlighting.

A full click may release the key too quickly to capture the highlight. I will try dragging from a key to outside the piano to see the highlight mid-motion. I also need to check whether the keyboard tool presses or holds keys.

Motion only hovers. It does not press.

Drag likely completes instantly without intermediate frames. Key actions are unlikely to capture the held state.

The key action may not be reaching the page. Alternatively, it might be a rapid down-and-up press that registers as zero sound.

A temporary `#trace` element will record recent press and release events to verify the handlers fired. After testing, the log can be removed or kept as a subtle "last note" indicator.

The browser tool might be sending the key to the wrong target. The iframe may lack focus even after clicking. A delayed release was considered but rejected.

The trace will persist after each press and release so the DOM can be inspected after reload. It will confirm both keyboard and mouse events. The trace will also verify that `synth.triggerAttack` fires by checking the Tone context state.

A `debug` helper will append the trace line with the Tone context state and active sounding notes. The UI will show a clean "Last: C4 released" message for verification. The ADSR slider labels appear misaligned in the screenshot.

The ADSR label misalignment is caused by the span containing both the value and unit text as one unit. The flex layout then treats it as a single child, so the browser wraps the "s" onto the next line instead of keeping it inline.

The span's `justify-content: space-between` is pushing the "s" text node to the right edge of the label row. The unit should be nested inside the bold element or the flex layout should be removed from the span.

The ADSR label CSS will be fixed to prevent the unit text from wrapping onto a new line. The worker CSP error likely means the Worker was created but failed to load its script, since the Tone constructor did not throw.

Direct `triggerAttack` uses the AudioContext clock, not the worker Transport. The worker failure should not prevent sound synthesis. The note will likely be inaudible in this environment.

A Tone.Meter will be added to the synth output to measure peak amplitude. The meter will sample during notes and remain elevated for one second after release. This provides a visual confirmation of sound and a useful meter.

A `requestAnimationFrame` loop will read the meter value and drive the visual bar. Tone.Meter uses a synchronous analyser, so it should function without the worker. Even if the worker fails, the envelope will still play on the audio thread. The meter will hold its peak after each note to confirm the click was heard.

Tone.start() has already resumed the audio context, so the engine is running. The next step is to reload and test with key presses like "KeyA", "A", and "w". Piano buttons might steal focus, but keydown events bubble up to the window listener, so they should still be captured.

The trace will verify both polyphony and keyboard input. The pointer event coordinates hit the piano key, so press() and release() likely fired. I will test several key descriptions after adding the trace.

A CSS class latched for 400 ms would fake a held highlight after release, but that is not the real behavior. The trace timestamps will verify when keys are actually pressed and released. A hold visualization will be added so the DOM can show a mid-state if the tool captures pointer events without sending intermediate pointerup events.

The trace will be embedded directly in the voice line, showing both the sounding count and the last note press and release. Clicking a black key near x=270, y=240 should register as C#4. The synth initialization will also be checked for errors.

TriggerAttack will be wrapped in a try/catch so any synthesis errors surface in the status line. The PolySynth constructor receives the voice type and an options object, which should correctly apply maxPolyphony, oscillator type, and envelope settings.

The PolySynth constructor uses a `ui` helper to parse positional arguments. I need to verify how it maps the voice type and options object so that `maxPolyphony` is assigned to the instance rather than nested inside the voice options.

The `ui` helper parses the constructor arguments as a voice type and an options object. Passing `Tone.Synth` as the first argument sets it as the voice, while the second argument becomes the options object. This means `maxPolyphony: 16` is correctly assigned to the PolySynth instance rather than nested inside the voice options.

The meter will poll Tone.Meter getValue in decibels and retain the peak reading. The CSP worker error occurred during initial Tone context setup before any click, so it should not block sound after interaction.

The screenshot confirms the black keys are correctly positioned between their white neighbors, with proper gaps at E-F and B-C. A `window.__piano` debug hook was considered but skipped because the browser tool does not evaluate JavaScript.

Audio starts on click. I’ll tighten the envelope labels and add a short activity readout so press, release, and keyboard events are visible.

C4 press and release works. The meter shows no peak. The note may have been too short for smoothing to catch it. Audio might not be producing samples in this sandbox. The meter bar could also be too subtle or dark.

The meter peak would decay to roughly 0.3 after about half a second, so it should still be visible. The release envelope lasts 0.55 seconds, meaning sound should still be decaying during the screenshot if audio is active. The meter reads RMS from the waveform analyser. If the audio context is producing sound, some level should appear.

The screenshot likely occurs well after the action completes, so some decay should still be audible. The meter may not receive signal because `toDestination()` replaces the destination, though `.connect()` should fan out to the meter. The meter's value might also require the audio clock to have run, and the analyser node should only populate data if audio is actively rendering.

The audio context may be running yet silent, or the analyser graph might not be pulling data. The meter should still receive audio from the synthesizer even without a destination connection. Another possibility is that the note attack and release happened too quickly for the envelope to open.

If triggerRelease and triggerAttack fire at the exact same Tone.now() timestamp, the envelope may cancel the attack and produce silence. This is a real bug for very fast clicks. In practice, pointerdown and pointerup events occur in separate turns, so timestamps differ and this issue does not affect normal use.

A 50–100 ms click is long enough for the 0.02 s attack to open, so a click should be audible. The meter may have missed the note if the entire press and release occurred between animation frames, though that seems unlikely for a click lasting more than 16 ms. I will check the Tone context state and record the maximum meter value to diagnose the issue.

I will add a peak-hold meter that does not decay to zero immediately, and log whether triggerAttack was actually called. I also verified that pointerup fired correctly, so the tool click is reaching the page. A brief afterglow highlight after release would be visually nice but might confuse the requirement to show it only while held, so I will skip it.

I will verify the highlight state by inspecting classList during the press event. I will also test keyboard and black key clicks.

The W key maps to C#4 and releases on keyup.

Testing additional keys and chord sequences. Dragging outside the keyboard to verify release behavior. Considering ways to capture key highlight states.

CSS :active won't show key highlights in screenshots. The JavaScript class is the right approach. Earlier drag responses only returned one frame, so capturing motion frames during a drag may not work.

A temporary 1.5-second key highlight linger will be added to verify the visual style in a screenshot. The delay will be removed afterward. Timing is already confirmed by code and sound count.

The lingering highlight test will take about a minute. Console errors remain stable after interactions. The Tone.js worker issue may be suppressed by configuring the audio context before Tone loads.

The Tone.js worker error is a CSP console issue, not a code bug. It fires during library initialization before our script runs, so it cannot be suppressed without editing tone.min.js. The fallback may not trigger if the Worker constructor does not throw.

Tone.js creates a Worker and catches synchronous exceptions to fall back to timeout. The CSP violation is asynchronous, so the library never detects it and keeps the dead worker. Transport and Draw will not tick. Direct AudioParam scheduling still works because it uses audioContext.currentTime instead of the JS clock.

Meter getValue reads the analyser synchronously. A zero level means either no audio rendered or the note was too short or cancelled.

I will add Tone.now() timestamps to the press and release trace logs. I will also update noteTrace to include the audio context state and meter peak.

A `data-flash` attribute will linger for 600 ms to keep key highlights visible in screenshots. CSS will target both `.is-on` and `.flash`. The flash will be removed after visual confirmation. The trace log may also be simplified or removed.

The audio context remains suspended even after Tone.start() resolves and the status is set to "Audio on".

The zero peak confirms the audio context is still suspended. The promise resolved but the state remains suspended, so the cause is unclear. The sequence shows press() ran before audioReady became true.

The trace was logged inside release() before the async start call resolved. The context was suspended at that moment, but Tone.start() later completed and set the status to Audio on.

The zero peak is expected because the note was released before audio started. Short clicks are broken: the note never triggers. Held keys work fine. The fix is to queue a minimum duration or trigger attack-release for taps that end before audio starts.

The trace was captured before Tone.start() resolved, so it may not reflect the final state. The promise resolved and set the status to Audio on, but the context could still be suspended afterward. This might indicate a sandbox autoplay policy limitation.

The resume might be the raw context class rather than Tone.

The raw context's resume method contains a recursive Promise that waits for the native audio context to reach the running state.

The recursive Promise waits for a statechange event but never calls the native resume() method. This is a bug if the context state remains suspended. The _state variable likely tracks a shadow state within the standardized-audio-context library embedded in Tone.

The trace was captured before Tone.start() resolved. The "AUDIO ON" status appeared in a microtask after the click, while the context was still suspended. This explains why both states appear in the screenshot.

The trace does not prove the context remained suspended after startup. The zero peak at release time occurred before audio began, and the note was never triggered because it released before audio was ready.

Next steps:
- Log the context state immediately after Tone.start resolves.
- Play a note that survives until audio is ready, or triggerAttackRelease for taps that ended during startup.
- After audio is ready, clicks should produce distinct attack and release times so they actually sound.

Even after startup completes, the click tool may be too fast for attack and release to be heard separately.

Context is running after activation.

The peak at release may be due to a short note, simultaneous trigger calls, or a meter connection issue. The highlight will stay only while held; the lingering flash is being removed since visual proof is sufficient.

A 5ms click likely peaks near zero because the attack envelope cannot finish before release. This is acceptable for the tool click. The implementation is correct. I will verify triggerAttack by checking activeVoices.

I will log activeVoices immediately after release. A zero count means the attack never fired or the voice was dropped. The worker clock might block envelope silence without stopping the sound itself.

The debug trace will be simplified to a clean last-note indicator. The meter stays as a visual aid.

A startup race condition was found. The first click might be lost if released before Tone.start resolves. An earlyReleases buffer will queue those taps and replay them once audio is ready.

The early-releases buffer replays queued taps with a 0.3-second release once audio is ready. An explicit context resume will be added after Tone.start to ensure the clock is running. The worker clock source may also be switched after load to avoid dead-ticker scheduling issues.

AudioParam automation runs on the audio thread, so a dead ticker will not silence the sound even if JavaScript callbacks are blocked. The meter may read zero because the analyser has not yet updated after a same-frame attack and release, or because of a connection issue.

A try/catch wrapper will be added around triggerAttack to catch any errors. The trace line will be simplified to a clean last-note indicator, and the context state and voice count will be logged to the console for verification.

The flash CSS and its function are being removed. Buttons use type=button to prevent form submission. Keyboard repeat is verified by code inspection. A drag-outside test will confirm the release source. The key k will be tested for C5. Polyphony is confirmed through separate source IDs; the tool cannot hold multiple notes simultaneously.

Blur and pointerup handlers prevent stuck notes. The CSP console error is from Tone.js initialization, not the implementation, so I will not hack the private ticker. Direct triggerAttack should still work even if the worker clock fails.

The Envelope uses signal ramps based on AudioParams.

Peak 0 likely means the click is shorter than the analyser window or attack. I'll log activeVoices to confirm the trigger fired. Switching the ticker to timeout should fix onsilence and other issues. A dead worker callback is not a concern since Envelope doesn't need it.

Tone.js cannot be configured before its script loads. The CSP error is a sandbox restriction on the library worker, not a functional failure for the synth. The audio context reached running after the user gesture.

I'll remove the debug flash and verbose trace, keeping only a simple last-note line and meter. An earlyReleases fix will handle the first-gesture missed note. I'll also test dragging outside the canvas.

The debug meter will display user-friendly note names instead of technical source IDs. The flash CSS will be removed so keys no longer stay highlighted after release.

Highlighting works, and the audio context reaches `running` after a gesture. I’ll drop the post-release flash and make sure a quick first tap still triggers a note.

Keyboard K released C5 with two active voices and the context running.

Polyphony confirmed: the two voices are the early tap still releasing plus the new C5. Clicking D#4 raised activeVoices to three and the meter showed a gold bar, confirming audio synthesis is working. Both screenshots show the key action succeeded. Next I will test dragging outside a key to verify release behavior, and remove the noisy console.log before finalizing.

The console.log will be removed so the post-activation console stays clean. Library warnings on load are expected and unrelated to our code. I will also test an unmapped key and verify the slider still works.

Drag outside released C4. Unmapped key ignored.

Removing console.log and the "Ignored key" trace to keep typing feedback clean. The app is nearly complete, but a potential double-play bug exists if earlyTaps and held notes overlap.

The double-play concern is resolved. Notes held through startup are handled by syncVoices, while early taps use triggerAttackRelease. Pointer and keyboard events share a reference-counted held map, so one release does not stop the other. Auto-repeat is blocked by an early return on e.repeat.

Press events are ignored when the same source already holds the note. Blur and pointerup outside the canvas both release held notes. Key events use stable e.code values, and case differences between KeyK and lowercase k are handled correctly. The audio meter connects without issues.

The playable C4–C5 piano is in `index.html`, using the local Tone.js synth with an ADSR envelope. Checked: - Labels and the A–K mapping on the keys and the legend. - Mouse clicks on white and black keys, plus computer keys, start a note and release it. The sounding count returns to 0. - Press highlighting, including a gold hold state, and release when the pointer ends outside a key. - After a gesture the status reads “Audio on”, the context is running, and the level meter moves. No new console errors from playing notes. Not verified here: hearing the tone, a sustained three-note chord, keyboard auto-repeat, or blur and focus-loss release. Those paths are in the handlers.
