Prompt for this run
Build a pentatonic synthesizer pad grid and arpeggiator using the provided Tone.js library. Use HTML, CSS, and JavaScript as needed. Write it to `index.html` in the current working directory using your file tools. Inline your own CSS and JavaScript. Do not use external assets, CDNs, or network requests. Use the provided `tone.min.js` (global `Tone`) through a plain local script tag; the runner will inline it into the final artifact. Required behavior: - Show ten labeled pads for two octaves of a C-major pentatonic scale. Clicking a pad plays its note through a synthesized voice with reverb and visibly marks the active pad. - Provide a separate sequence-selection toggle for each pad. Start with a nonempty selection. The arpeggiator repeatedly plays selected notes in ascending pitch order, one note per eighth-note step. - Provide Play, Stop, and a tempo control from 60 to 180 BPM. Tempo and selection changes take effect during playback. An empty selection produces no new notes. - Activate audio through a user gesture. Stop prevents new arpeggiator notes, allowing existing release and reverb tails to decay. Repeated Play must not create overlapping schedulers. - Synthesize every sound; do not load audio files. Verify: Click a pad and check its active feedback. Start the arpeggiator, change one selected note and the tempo, and check that the visible sequence responds. Stop playback and inspect the console for audio-initialization or scheduling errors.

Let me start by looking at the working directory and the tone.min.js library.

thinking
Let me check the Tone.js version to know the API.
{"command":"grep -o \"version:\\\"[0-9.]*[^\\\"]*\\\"\" tone.min.js | head -5; grep -o \"Tone version [^\\\"]*\" tone.min.js | head -3"}(no output)
thinking
Let me look for a version string differently. The file is minified. It's a UMD build without a min.map file. It's a UMD bundle, so it likely is Tone 14.x or 15.x. Let me test in node with a fake environment.
{"command":"cd /tmp/job-gOPTTN && node -e \"\nglobal.self = global;\nglobal.window = global;\ntry {\n const T = require('./tone.min.js');\n* Tone.js v14.8.49 * keys sample: AMOscillator,AMSynth,Abs,Add,AmplitudeEnvelope,Analyser,AudioToGain,AutoFilter,AutoPanner,AutoWah,BaseContext,BiquadFilter,BitCrusher,Buffer,BufferSource,Buffers,Channel,Chebyshev,Chorus,Clock,Compressor,Context,Convolver,CrossFade,DCMeter,Delay,Destination,Distortion,Draw,DuoSynth,EQ3,Emitter,Envelope,FFT,FMOscillator,FMSynth,FatOscillator,FeedbackCombFilter,FeedbackDelay,Filter has Synth true PolySynth true Loop true Start false getContext true setContext true UserMediaAudioPlayer false Tone namespace? false
thinking
Tone.js v14.8.49. So API: `Tone.start()`? In v14, `Tone.start()` doesn't exist... Let me check. Actually `Tone.start` was added in Tone 15? In v14.8, there's `Tone.getContext().resume()` and `Tone.start()` — hmm, keys sample was alphabetical up to "Distortion"/"Emitter"... "Start" false means there's no `Tone.Start`. Let me check `Tone.start`.
In v14.8.x, `Tone.start` does exist? Let me check the object keys fully.
Also note the console output "* Tone.js v14.8.49 *" appeared — that's a console log.
Let me check available relevant classes: Synth, PolySynth (v14 PolySynth takes voice constructor + options), FMSynth, MembraneSynth, Loop, Transport, reverb: `Tone.Reverb` (convolution based, generates impulse offline — needs OfflineContext, no network, fine) or `Tone.FeedbackDelay` + `ToneJCQuantizerReverb`? Tone has `Tone.JCReverb` and `ToneJCQuantizerReverb` (in v14: `Tone.JCReverb`, `Tone.LevonReverb`, `Tone.Reverb`, `Tone.Freeverb`). Reverb uses offline rendering which requires `OfflineContext` — works offline, no network. It's async though (`generate()` returns promise). Alternatively use `Tone.Freeverb`.
Let's check keys list for Reverb, start, etc.
Also PolySynth in v14 has `releaseAll()`. Tone.v14 Transport: `Tone.Transport.scheduleRepeat`, `Tone.Transport.start()`, `Tone.Transport.stop()` (v14 has stop and pause). In v15, Transport.stop() resets. In 14.8, `Transport.stop()` stops and... `Transport.pause()` pauses. Requirement: "Stop prevents new arpeggiator notes, allowing existing release and reverb tails to decay." Stopping the transport doesn't cut the audio tail, so fine.
Repeated Play must not create overlapping schedulers: use a single scheduled loop created once (scheduleRepeat callback by id), and on Play just call `Transport.start()` if not already started; guard with a state flag. Also if I re-schedule on tempo changes, no need — tempo is `Tone.Transport.bpm.value`.
Design:
- 10 pads: C pentatonic major two octaves: C D E G A across octaves 4 and 5 → C4,D4,E4,G4,A4,C5,D5,E5,G5,A5. Labels show note name and freq maybe.
- Each pad: a clickable body (plays note) and a separate toggle control (a small "SEQ" checkbox/button) — requirement says "Provide a separate sequence-selection toggle for each pad." So the toggle must be separate from the play click. I'll make each pad card with the main pad area (plays) and a small toggle button/switch labeled "SEQ" beneath (stopPropagation).
- Arpeggiator plays selected notes in ascending pitch order, one note per eighth step. Since ascending order over the two octaves, sequence = sorted selected notes; each eighth step advances index, wrapping.
- Tempo slider 60–180 BPM with readout.
- Play/Stop buttons.
- Visualization: active pad highlight during arpeggiation too (draw callback / scheduling time based highlight). Use `Tone.Draw` or schedule a highlight at note time via setTimeout relative to audio context time. Simpler: in the synth trigger, compute the time and use `Tone.Transport.schedule`? Actually inside the repeat callback (which fires at the scheduled time, slightly ahead), the visual highlight will be roughly in sync — v14 scheduleRepeat callback fires at scheduled time (with small lookahead offset). Good enough; but I can use `Tone.Draw.schedule(()=>{...}, time)` for accurate sync. Let's use `Tone.Draw.schedule` — available in v14 as Tone.Draw. Or use the callback directly with a note-off scheduling for duration.
Voice: PolySynth with FMSynth or custom synth voice with ADSR, plus filter, plus reverb + delay chain. Signal path: synth → gain → [dry + reverb] → limiter → destination. Tone.Reverb decay 3s requires offline generation (~fast, but takes a moment). To be safe with sandboxed browser tests (no network needed anyway), use `Tone.Reverb` with `ready` promise, fallback to `Tone.FeedbackDelay`+ filters if Reverb fails? Actually a simple algorithmic reverb: `Tone.Freeverb` exists in v14? Let me check keys. I'll check.
Also need `Tone.start` check for user gesture resume.
Let's inspect.{"command":"cd /tmp/job-gOPTTN && node -e \"\nglobal.self=global; global.window=global;\nconst T=require('./tone.min.js');\nconst names=Obje* Tone.js v14.8.49 * 169 AudioToGain, AutoFilter, AutoPanner, BiquadFilter, DCMeter, Delay, Draw, FMOscillator, FMSynth, FeedbackCombFilter, FeedbackDelay, Filter, Freeverb, Frequency, FrequencyClass, FrequencyEnvelope, FrequencyShifter, Gain, GainToAudio, JCReverb, Limiter, Loop, LowpassCombFilter, MembraneSynth, Meter, Offline, OfflineContext, OnePoleFilter, Panner, Panner3D, PingPongDelay, PolySynth, Reverb, Sequence, Transport, TransportTime, TransportTimeClass, Waveform, dbToGain, gainToDb, getContext, getDraw, getTransport, intervalToFrequencyRatio, now, start Tone.start: function Tone.getContext: function
thinking
`Tone.start` exists. Good. Also `Tone.Reverb` exists (offline generated, may take ~1s). Let me use `Tone.Reverb` with a fallback. Actually, to avoid heavy CPU in the browser test, maybe use `Tone.JCReverb` (algorithmic, cheap) plus a `FeedbackDelay`. Hmm, quality: I'll use `Tone.Reverb` (decay 2.6, preDelay) initialized lazily at first user gesture, and while not ready, route through delay. Simpler approach: build chain:
voice (PolySynth of FMSynth) → filter (lowpass) → gain → reverb (Tone.Reverb) → limiter → master gain → destination. Also dry path gain.
I'll create Reverb at init but its generation happens asynchronously; if not ready it just outputs silence? In v14, `Tone.Reverb` is a Convolver with generated buffer; before `ready` resolves the convolution buffer is empty → dry signal passes through? Convolver with no buffer passes nothing? WebConvolver with null buffer passes through the input? Actually a ConvolverNode with no buffer set outputs silence... In Tone v14, `Convolver` sets buffer; when `_buffer` is null, `this._convolver.buffer = null`, which means convolver passes silence. That would mute audio until the reverb is ready — bad if generation is slow. Mitigation: gate the wet path — start with reverb wet gain 0 and fade in when `reverb.ready` resolves. Or simply use JCReverb (algorithmic, instant). Let me check JCReverb params: `new Tone.JCReverb(roomSize)` — 0..1. It's a real v14 class (JCReverb). Cheap and instant. Combine JCReverb + FeedbackDelay for a lush sound. But JCReverb in v14 might be deprecated/removed... it exists in keys list (JCReverb). Good.
Actually, use Tone.Reverb with ready gating AND fallback: I'll do Tone.Reverb with wet/dry crossfade so nothing is muted at start (dry full, wet 0 → fade wet to 1 on ready). That gives nice sound. Let me do:
master chain:
synth → filter → dryGain → limiter
synth → filter → wetSend → reverb → limiter
with wetSend.gain = 0 initially; on reverb.ready → ramp to 0.8 over 1s.
Hmm, but if generation takes 2s the first clicks are dry-ish. That's acceptable and safe. Actually, alternatively I can pre-generate the reverb at init (before user gesture) — Tone.Reverb generation uses OfflineContext, which in browsers without started AudioContext... `new Tone.Reverb(2.6)` in constructor calls generate() using OfflineContext rendering — OfflineContext doesn't need a user gesture. `context.render` uses OfflineAudioContext which works without gesture. So it can start generating at page load. Good — likely ready quickly.
But careful: creating Tone context at load time before gesture — AudioContext will be in "suspended" state which is fine; OfflineContext works. Also Tone.Transport time only advances when context is running. We start the transport after gesture (Tone.start() resumes). Good.
Let me also add a subtle visualizer (Waveform → oscilloscope canvas) — nice but optional. It requires the user gesture; waveform analysis works fine. I'll add a small canvas scope to make it feel like a synth. Keep it low cost.
Now let's also consider `Tone.PolySynth` in v14: `new Tone.PolySynth(Tone.FMSynth, {...})`. And `triggerAttackRelease(note, duration, time, velocity)`. Also `releaseAll()`.
Scheduler approach: Use `Tone.Transport.scheduleRepeat(cb, "8n", 0, Infinity)` — created once on init, guarded id. Inside cb(time): if not running or selection empty → return; else pick next note from sorted selected list (advance index), trigger, schedule draw highlight.
Ascending pitch order: notes sorted by MIDI/step index. Since pads are ordered ascending anyway (C4..A5), I can sort selected pads by index → ascending pitch.
Edge: "change one selected note and the tempo ... check that the visible sequence responds". The visible sequence: show a strip of the current sequence steps (like a stepper showing the ordered selected notes with the active one highlighted). I'll render a "sequence rail" showing selected notes in order with position marker, updating on selection change and on each step. Also uncheck → the rail updates immediately during playback.
Also "Repeated Play must not create overlapping schedulers": guard: if transport already started and state playing, Play does nothing (button disabled/active state). Also resume context.
Also allow tapping pads while playing (they layer notes through PolySynth).
Voice per pad clicking: same synth; each note has attack/decay; use triggerAttack for hold-on-mouse-down? Simpler: click → triggerAttackRelease(freq, 0.55) with reverb. Add active class with timeout. Also support keyboard? Optional nice-to-have: keys 1-0 for pads. Might add but keep minimal. I'll add keyboard mapping (a s d f g ... ) maybe skip; keep the essentials plus a scope.
Also "visibly marks the active pad" — pad gets `.active` class with glow while sounding plus a short decay animation.
Note labels: C4 D4 E4 G4 A4 C5 D5 E5 G5 A5 with frequencies displayed (e.g., 261.6 Hz). Pentatonic major degrees labeled 1 2 3 5 6.
UI design: dark, neo-console look, grid of 10 pads (5 per octave, two rows of 5). Each pad tile: note name big, octave small, freq tiny, degree chip, and a SEQ toggle switch (small pill with a knob + "SEQ" text). Play/Stop buttons + BPM slider (60-180) + sequence rail + step indicator (8n count). Maybe a swing? No, keep to spec.
Now, browser tooling: I have a `browser` tool that runs index.html and inspects. Note the runner: the artifact runs sandboxed with no network; tone.min.js is in the current dir and the runner inlines it. My local browser test should work with the script tag pointing at "./tone.min.js".
Timing: audio in headless-ish browser may not have real audio but Web Audio API exists in Chrome headless. `Tone.start()` may work. Let's build and test.
Let me write the file now.
Implementation details for highlight sync: use `Tone.Draw.schedule(cb, time)` where time is the transport time passed to the callback. Draw uses context.currentTime mapping — fine.
Also for pad click: highlight immediately (no lookahead).
I also want a "step LED" row showing 8 steps? The sequence rail: since sequence length = number of selected (max 10), show each selected note as a chip in order with index; highlight current. Good enough and clearly demonstrates ascending-order sequence and reactivity.
Also display "Steps: N | one note per eighth note".
Let's write code.
CSS: no external fonts (system stack). Use grid. Add nice touches: gradient, glow, subtle transitions, focus rings for a11y.
Let me be careful with `Tone.Transport.bpm` slider — set `Tone.Transport.bpm.value` on input; changes take effect immediately (v14 supports it).
Also add `Tone.Transport.clear()` on unload? Not needed.
One risk: In v14, `Transport.scheduleRepeat(callback, "8n")` inside callback signature gets time. To make sure notes aren't overlapping too much, note duration = "8n" * 0.9 with release envelope.
Master chain:
```js
const ctx = Tone.getContext();
limiter = new Tone.Limiter(-2).toDestination(); // maybe use Tone.Compressor
master = new Tone.Gain(0.9).connect(limiter);
dry = new Tone.Gain(1).connect(master);
send = new Tone.Gain(0); // wet
reverb = new Tone.Reverb({decay:2.8, preDelay:0.02, wet:1}).connect(master);
send.connect(reverb);
filter = new Tone.Filter({type:'lowpass', frequency: 3200, rolloff: -12, Q:0.7});
voice = new Tone.PolySynth(Tone.FMSynth, {
harmonicity: 2.5, modulationIndex: 0.6,
oscillator: {type:'sine'}, modulation: {type:'triangle'},
envelope: {attack:0.005, decay:0.25, sustain:0.35, release:1.4},
modulationEnvelope: {attack:0.004, decay:0.12, sustain:0, release:0.3},
portamento: 0
}).connect(filter);
filter.connect(dry); filter.connect(send);
```
Wait — PolySynth connects to filter; then filter → dry (master) and → send → reverb → master. Reverb has wet control internally (1 = all wet). Fine.
Voice trigger with velocity 0.8.
Also `voice.releaseAll()` on Stop? Requirement says Stop allows existing release tails to decay → so don't cut. Just stop transport.
FMSynth release: PolySynth voices auto-release after triggerAttackRelease duration. Good.
Handle the possibility that Tone.Reverb generation is slow: `reverb.ready.then(()=> send.gain.rampTo(0.7, 1.0))`. Add catch → fallback to JCReverb? Simpler: fallback to a FeedbackDelay-based pseudo-reverb if reverb fails:
```js
try { reverb = new Tone.Reverb(...) } catch(e) { reverb = new Tone.FeedbackDelay(...) }
```
Also add a small waveform scope using Tone.Waveform(2048) connected to master (analysis works without gesture too but data is zero). Draw with requestAnimationFrame. Keep it cheap: draw only when playing or notes active? Just always draw at rAF with a simple path; negligible.
Hmm — the `browser` tool with motion frames; fine.
Let me also add data-attributes for testability: e.g., `data-note="C4"`, ids `pad-C4`, `seq-C4`, `#play`, `#stop`, `#bpm`, `#rail`, `#status`. Also expose `window.__arp` state object for debugging? Could help verification: expose `window.padgrid = {state, noteEvents: []}`. I'll add a light debug hook that logs each played note into a bounded array, plus status line "Last step: E4 @ 120 BPM". Good for verification too.
Also on empty selection: status shows "No notes selected — arpeggiator silent" and rail shows "—".
Let me now write index.html.
Accessibility: buttons with aria-pressed for SEQ toggles, pads as <button>, aria-live status.
Time to write.
Structure of a pad tile:
```html
<div class="pad-unit" data-i="0">
<button class="pad" id="pad-C4" data-note="C4" aria-label="Play C4">
<span class="pad-top">
<span class="deg">1</span>
<span class="oct">C4</span>
</span>
<span class="note">C<span class="octdigit">4</span></span>
<span class="hz">261.6 Hz</span>
<span class="ripple"></span>
</button>
<button class="seq-toggle" id="seq-C4" data-note="C4" aria-pressed="true">
<span class="knob"></span><span class="lbl">SEQ</span>
</button>
</div>
```
Rows: octave 5 on top, octave 4 on bottom? Typically ascending upward: row 1 = octave 5 (C5..A5), row 2 = octave 4 (C4..A4). Ascending pitch order then reads bottom-left→ top-right. Fine, but sequence rail shows order anyway. I'll label rows "Octave 5" / "Octave 4" on the left as row labels.
Keyboard shortcuts: keys for C4..A5: "q w e r t" for octave 4? Hmm: use 1-5 for octave 4 and 6-0 for octave 5? Let me do: a s d f g → C4 D4 E4 G4 A4; j k l ; ' → C5 D5 E5 G5 A5. And Space → toggle play/stop. Add hint text.
Write the file.
Active pad marking: class `active` with glow + inner brightening; removed after min(duration, ...) or via a scheduled off time. I'll implement `flash(padEl, ms)` using setTimeout with stored handles; and for arpeggiator use note duration ms = stepDur*1000 * 1.1.
Let's write code carefully.
```js
const NOTES = [
{note:'C4', hz:261.63, deg:'1', oct:4},
...
];
```
Compute hz via Tone.Frequency(note).toFrequency() to avoid hardcode errors. Good — use Tone.Frequency.
Steps: MIDI index via Tone.Frequency(note).midi.
Selection stored as Set of note names; initial selection: e.g., C4, E4, G4, A4, D5 (nonempty). Let's default select a musically nice subset: C4, G4, C5, E5, A5? Hmm "Start with a nonempty selection" — pick 5-6 pads. Default: all except? Let's default select C4, E4, G4, D5, G5 → ascending: C4 E4 G4 D5 G5.
Now code for scheduling:
```js
let repeatId = null;
function ensureScheduler(){
if (repeatId !== null) return;
repeatId = Tone.Transport.scheduleRepeat((time)=>{ step(time); }, '8n');
}
function step(time){
const seq = currentSeq(); // array of note objects sorted
if(!playing || seq.length===0) return;
stepIndex = seq.length ? (stepIndex % seq.length) : 0;
const n = seq[stepIndex++];
voice.triggerAttackRelease(n.note, Math.max(0.12, stepDur*0.9), time, 0.9);
Tone.Draw.schedule(()=>{ markPad(n.note, ...); updateRail(i); logEvent(n); }, time);
}
```
Careful: if seq changes length, stepIndex may exceed → use modulo. Also compute stepDur from bpm at draw time: `60/Tone.Transport.bpm.value/2`.
Play:
```js
async function play(){
await Tone.start(); // resume ctx
ensureScheduler();
if(!Tone.Transport.running) ... // v14: Tone.Transport.state === 'started'
Tone.Transport.start('+0.05') // or Tone.Transport.start()
playing = true;
}
```
Guard: use `state.playing`. If already playing, Play just returns (and maybe logs "already running"). In v14 Transport has `.state` ('stopped'|'started'|'paused') and `started` boolean. Since we don't pause, just check `playing`.
Stop: `playing=false; Tone.Transport.stop();` — wait, Transport.stop() in v14 stops and resets position to 0 (and clears scheduled events? No — `stop()` doesn't clear events, `cancel()` does). Actually careful: `Transport.stop()` resets position; repeat scheduled at 0 continues from 0 when restarted. Also does stop() remove scheduled repeats? No, it keeps them. But note: In v14 `Transport.stop()`... let me verify: In Tone 14, `Transport.stop()` stops and resets to 0? Actually `Transport.pause()` keeps position; `stop()` = pause + reset to 0? Hmm, Tone 14: `Transport.stop(time)` → "Stop the transport. All events also will be stopped." and `scheduledEvents` remain. Also `Transport.cancel(0)`.
Concern: does `Transport.stop()` clear the scheduled repeat? In Tone.js v14, `Transport.stop()` does NOT remove events; `Transport.clear(id)` does. But there was a behavior where `stop()` calls `this._transport.stop()` and `Tone.Context`... Let me just test in the browser: play → stop → play again, verify notes still fire (that's also a required check: repeated Play must not create overlapping schedulers but must still work).
Safer approach: keep repeat scheduled; on stop use `Tone.Transport.pause()`? But position reset matters little. I'll use `Tone.Transport.stop()` then on next play ensure repeatId still valid by checking `Tone.Transport.has(id)`? Hmm, v14 Transport doesn't have `has`. Simplest: on stop, call `Tone.Transport.cancel(0)` and set repeatId=null; on play, call ensureScheduler() to re-create. That guarantees exactly one repeat at any time and no accumulation. But cancel(0) removes all events from 0 onward — we only have our one event. Then ensureScheduler re-adds. That's clean and avoids duplicates and dangling.
Wait: but cancel/stop while notes scheduled slightly ahead may cut notes? Notes scheduled in the future within lookahead (0.1s) — the synth trigger call happens synchronously inside the callback when the callback fires, so audio scheduling is immediate: the callback fires at (time - lookahead)? In v14, `scheduleRepeat` callback fires at the event time in the "transport timeline" but events are processed with lookahead: the callback is invoked early with the audio time param, i.e. Tone's Transport emits callbacks ahead of time by lookahead. Actually Tone's Timeline callbacks fire at the scheduled time (Transport emits `time` = transport time, but the actual JS call happens at context.currentTime ≈ time - lookahead? In Tone 14, Transport uses a Clock with lookahead 0.1s and the events are invoked at (time) when "now + lookahead" reaches the event, i.e., callbacks are called ahead of the audio time by up to 0.1s. So notes are already triggered before their sound. So if we stop at the moment a callback has fired early, that note may still play (fine — tail allowed to decay, that's exactly what spec wants: "Stop prevents new arpeggiator notes").
To be safe on stop: set `playing=false` first (so no new notes even if a callback sneaks in), then stop transport, then cancel(0), then clear the flag. Also `Tone.Draw` scheduled marks: they'd fire after stop — acceptable; but I'll guard by comparing token.
Also on stop: `voice.releaseAll()`? No — spec says allow release tails. releaseAll would cut them. Don't.
Tempo change during playback: set `Tone.Transport.bpm.value = v`. In v14 that takes effect live.
Also need: tempo control 60..180.
Rail: render selected notes in order, chip per note, highlight chip index of last played. Also show "8th-note step" tick indicator pulses.
Also show a step counter/ "next" chip.
Also maybe add a mode where empty selection shows "— empty —".
Also expose for verification: `window.__padgrid` = {playing, bpm, selection, lastNote, notesPlayed}.
Now write.
Also the status text updates: "Playing · 120 BPM · 5 notes · next D5". Use `Tone.Transport.on('start pause stop')`? Simpler manual updates.
Let's write index.html fully.
CSS design ideas: deep navy/charcoal background with subtle radial gradients, neon cyan/amber accents, glassy tiles with 1px highlight, pad press animation, active glow ring, SEQ toggle in amber when on, row labels, header with title, transport panel with buttons + slider, scope canvas, footer hints. Responsive: max-width 980px, grid auto.
Font: system stack: ui-sans-serif / -apple-system, and monospace for numbers.
Write it.Now let me build the app.

thinking
There's a syntax bug: in the PADS build I wrote `});` incorrectly:
```js
OCTAVES.forEach(function(oct){
SCALE_DEGREES.forEach(function(d){
...
PADS.push({...});
});
});
```
Actually indentation is off but syntax: PADS.push({...}); then closing `});` for inner forEach then `});` for outer. Let me re-read what I wrote:
```
PADS.push({
...
midi: Tone.Frequency(label).midi
});
});
});
```
That's push close, inner forEach close, outer forEach close. OK valid.
Also `reverb = new Tone JCReverbFallback();` — that's a syntax error! Fix it. Also `setSelectionAll` has messy logic with "alt". Let me clean those up.
Also `Tone.version` may not exist in v14 (it's `Tone.version`? there is a version string in build). I'll keep fallback.
Let me fix these issues.

Wait, `logError` is defined later via function declaration — hoisted, fine. But it's defined inside the IIFE as a function declaration → hoisted. Good. Now the `setSelectionAll` uses DEFAULT_PATTERN defined just before it — fine. Let me syntax check the JS by extracting the script and running node --check.

Issues found:
1. `midi undefined` — Tone.Frequency(label).midi doesn't exist in v14 (it's `.toMidi()`). Fix.
2. CSP: `worker-src 'none'` blocked → Tone.Reverb generation uses an OfflineContext render... Actually the worker error comes from Tone's Reverb generate? Tone v14 uses `OfflineContext.render` which uses OfflineAudioContext, no worker. Hmm, the worker might come from the browser tool's own machinery, or Tone's `Tone.Offline`? Actually Tone.js v14 doesn't spawn workers. The blob worker might come from the CSP sandbox harness. But it's an error in console — could be from Tone.Reverb? Let me check: Tone v14 has "Tone/context/Context" — no workers. Hmm, maybe it's from the runner's inlining. Let me test by checking whether reverb.ready resolves.
Actually, the AudioContext warnings repeated many times (28) suggests something repeatedly tries to start the context — that's Tone's OfflineContext creation for Reverb (creating many AudioContexts?) Actually the repeated warnings appear at load: each `new Tone.X` node creation... no. Tone's Context logs a warning each time an AudioContext is created without gesture. The Reverb's OfflineContext render creates OfflineAudioContexts — those don't need gesture. Hmm.
Possibly the many warnings come from Tone's `Tone.start`? We didn't call it at load. Or from the Waveform/analysis? Or from `Tone.getContext().resume()`? We didn't call at load.
Maybe it's Tone's Reverb → `Convolver.generate` → `Offline(2, ...)` → `new OfflineContext` → and OfflineContext in v14 creates a regular AudioContext-based "dummyContext" for offline rendering (Tone v14's OfflineContext uses a real AudioContext + OfflineAudioContext? It uses `Tone.getContext()`... ). The many warnings likely come from that. Anyway, the worker CSP error might be from Tone's OfflineContext? Hmm.
Let me check whether audio actually starts and notes play. Also check whether reverb is generating; if the CSP blocks a worker used by reverb generation, reverb.ready may never resolve → send stays at 0 → still audible dry signal. That's acceptable but I'd rather have a working reverb. Let me test: click a pad and check state.
Also the "AudioContext was not allowed to start" warnings at load are just warnings (expected before gesture). But 28 of them is noisy. Might be from the rAF scope loop calling `wave.getValues()` which creates a DCMeter/Analyser each time? In Tone v14, `Waveform.getValues()` calls `this._analyser...` — no context creation. Hmm, but `Tone.getContext()` inside my reverb.ready callback... only once.
Actually! `logError`? no. Let me instrument: check console after some time and count warnings. Maybe they come from Tone's OfflineContext rendering loop which repeatedly creates contexts (each OfflineContext in v14 creates a new `Context` → new AudioContext → warning). Tone.Reverb generates IR in chunks? `Reverb.generate()` uses `Tone.Offline(...)` once. Hmm, 28 warnings...
Let me test in browser: click a pad, then check console again and inspect.
Plan fixes:
- `.toMidi()` for midi value.
- Consider replacing Tone.Reverb with a cheaper algorithmic reverb built from delays to avoid worker/offline issues: e.g., a "shell" style reverb using 4 FeedbackDelays + filters, or `Tone.JCReverb` (algorithmic, no offline render). JCReverb in v14 exists and is instant. Using JCReverb + a FeedbackDelay + a Chorus could sound decent and avoids CSP/offline problems entirely.
Let me first check if Reverb works (ready resolves). I'll evaluate via console... The browser tool doesn't have an "evaluate" action. Hmm — actions: reload, inspect, screenshot, motion, click, drag, key, type, scroll. No eval. So I can't run arbitrary JS directly. I can infer from DOM: status text says when errors happen. I could add a debug display in the DOM showing reverb state. Let me add a small diagnostic line in the engine badge: e.g., "reverb: ready/…".
Actually a simpler robust approach: build the reverb from Tone primitives (no offline render, no worker): a classic multi-tap reverb:
```js
function makeReverb(){
const wet = new Tone.Gain(1);
const pre = new Tone.Gain(1);
const combDelays = [0.0297, 0.0371, 0.0411, 0.0437].map(t => new Tone.FeedbackDelay(t, 0.78)); // hmm feedback delay with high feedback = infinite ringing
}
```
Better: use `Tone.JCReverb` (Jerry Kimming? It's "JCReverb" — a reverb effect based on... it's algorithmic using allpass/delay lines, no worker). Let me check the source of JCReverb in the bundle: it uses `Delay`, `AllpassFilter`, `Gain` — pure nodes. In v14, JCReverb is deprecated but functional? Let me grep.
Alternatively, `Tone.Freeverb` — v14 includes Freeverb (Stefan Sauer's port) which is a ScriptProcessor-based... In Tone 14, Freeverb was reimplemented with AudioWorklet? Hmm, older Freeverb used `ScriptProcessorNode` (deprecated but works). Actually Tone v14's Freeverb uses `ToneFreeverb` wrapper around... let me grep the bundle for "createScriptProcessor" and "audioWorklet" to see which uses workers (the CSP-blocked worker!).
Let me grep.{"command":"cd /tmp/job-gOPTTN && grep -c \"audioWorklet\" tone.min.js; grep -c \"createScriptProcessor\" tone.min.js; grep -c \"new Worker\1 1 1 JCReverb:()=>Va JCReverb"
thinking
There's 1 audioWorklet usage and 1 `new Worker` — likely the worklet polyfill (`workletaddinscript` or Tone's `_AudioWorkletGlobalScope`?). Let me find where the worker is created — maybe it's Tone's `Tone.getContext` worklet polyfill used by... Let's grep context.
{"command":"cd /tmp/job-gOPTTN && grep -o \".\\{260\\}new Worker.\\{260\\}\" tone.min.js"}message\n\t\t\t// and schedules a new tick\n\t\t\tfunction tick(){\n\t\t\t\tsetTimeout(tick, timeoutTime);\n\t\t\t\tself.postMessage('tick');\n\t\t\t}\n\t\t\t// call tick initially\n\t\t\ttick();\n\t\t\t`],{type:"text/javascript"}),e=URL.createObjectURL(t),s=new Worker(e);s.onmessage=this._callback.bind(this),this._worker=s}_createTimeout(){this._timeout=setTimeout((()=>{this._createTimeout(),this._callback()}),1e3*this._updateInterval)}_createClock(){if("worker"===this._type)try{this._createWorker()}catch(t){this._type="ti
thinking
That's Tone's `Worker`-based Transport clock (`ToneClock`/`TransportEvent`? It's `Tone.context/Transport`'s "WorkerTransport" — Tone v14's Transport uses a Worker clock for scheduling precision!). So the CSP-blocked worker means the Transport's worker clock fails → it falls back to timeout ("_createTimeout"). Good, there's a fallback: `catch(t){this._type="ti...}` → timeout fallback. So the Transport still works, just with 1s... wait `_createTimeout` uses `this._updateInterval` seconds — default updateInterval is 0.08? Let's check: `_createTimeout(){ setTimeout(..., 1e3*this._updateInterval)}`. The Worker class constructor takes updateInterval; Tone's WorkerTransport uses updateInterval of... In v14, `Transport` uses `new TransportWorker()` with updateInterval 0.08? Hmm, actually Tone v14's `ToneTransport`/`Transport` uses `WorkerClass` with 0.08s? Let me check what happens: the CSP blocks worker creation → error thrown → fallback to timeout clock with interval `this._updateInterval`. If that's 1 second, the transport would be very jittery (ticks every 1s but events still scheduled at correct audio times, so timing remains accurate as long as lookahead covers the interval... actually no: the transport's "tick" emits events with lookahead; if ticks happen every 1s, and lookahead is... Tone's worker clock posts 'tick' and transport processes events in [now, now+lookahead]. With 1s ticks and lookahead 0.1s, events would be MISSED or late → severe problems.
Hmm. Let me check the actual updateInterval used. Grep for the worker class instantiation.
Actually the CSP `worker-src 'none'` will also block in the final artifact? The runner inlines tone.min.js into a single HTML file that runs in a sandboxed iframe with CSP worker-src 'none' presumably. So the worker clock will fail there too. I must ensure the transport works reliably without a worker.
Options:
1. Don't use Tone.Transport at all — implement my own scheduler with `setInterval`/`requestAnimationFrame` + `Tone.getContext().lookAhead`, scheduling notes with `voice.triggerAttackRelease(note, dur, time)` using context time. That's fully under my control and robust.
That's actually cleaner: a lookahead scheduler:
```js
let nextTime = 0; // context time of next 8th
function tick(){
const ctx = Tone.getContext();
const now = ctx.currentTime;
while (nextTime < now + ctx.lookAhead + 0.12){
scheduleStep(nextTime);
nextTime += stepSeconds();
}
}
setInterval(tick, 25);
```
Tempo changes take effect immediately since stepSeconds is read each iteration. Selection changes take effect at next step. Stop: stop the interval; already-scheduled notes (within lookahead ~0.2s) will still play, tails decay.
But wait — does `ctx.lookAhead` work while context is running? Tone's Context with lookAhead 0.1 means nodes' scheduling is offset. Actually in Tone v14, `Tone.getContext().lookAhead` = 0.1 and `Tone.now()` returns currentTime + lookAhead. Scheduling at absolute times works.
Hmm, but there's a subtlety: Tone's Context "disconnectedTime"/"suspend/resume" — fine.
Also using Tone.Transport would be more idiomatic... but the CSP worker issue makes it risky. Let me first check whether the timeout fallback works adequately. Let me look at the updateInterval value.
Actually, let me test empirically: click Play in the browser and watch the status/notes counter over time (motion frames). If the transport's fallback clock works, notes will fire at the right rate. Let me just test with the current build — the console error count and the status text will tell me.
But regardless, I think a self-contained lookahead scheduler on the Tone context is more reliable and still "uses the provided Tone.js library" (Tone.now, Tone.context, Tone.Frequency, Tone.Draw, synth, reverb). I could use Tone.Transport with a guard, plus fallback. Simpler: implement my own scheduler but keep it Tone-based (Tone.now(), Tone.context.currentTime, Tone.Draw). Hmm, but "schedulers" wording in spec — fine either way.
Actually, best of both: try Tone.Transport first; verify in browser. Let me test playback now with clicks and motion frames to see if steps advance.
Let me first fix the midi bug, then test play.
Also reverb: does Tone.Reverb use OfflineContext → which creates... OfflineContext in v14 creates an OfflineAudioContext — no worker needed. But it might also create a Context that logs warnings. The 28 "AudioContext was not allowed to start" warnings — hmm, that's a lot. Maybe from repeated `Tone.getContext()`? No. It's likely from OfflineContext construction (which creates a `ToneContext` wrapping a real AudioContext in v14? Actually `OfflineContext` extends `BaseContext` with an OfflineAudioContext; the warning is Chrome's autoplay policy for real AudioContexts).
Hmm, maybe each `new Tone.Gain()` etc. triggers `Tone.getContext()` which creates the singleton context once. So one warning. 28 warnings suggests repeated context creation — maybe from the rAF loop calling `wave.getValues()`? In v14, `Waveform.getValues()` → `this._analyser.getValue()` — the Analyser's `getValue` calls `this.context...`? no creation.
Wait — maybe the warnings come from Tone's `Tone.getContext()` being called in `drawScope` via `wave.getValues()` → `Tone.getContext()` returns singleton. Not new.
Could be from `Tone.Offline`/Reverb generate loop: Reverb.generate renders in chunks? It renders once.
Let me just test after fixing and observe whether the warnings keep growing over time (that would indicate the rAF loop). I'll add a guard: only call getValues when audioReady.
Let me apply fixes:
1. midi: use `Tone.Frequency(label).toMidi()`.
2. Scope: skip until audioReady (avoid needless work).
3. Replace Tone.Transport scheduling with a robust custom lookahead scheduler? Let me first test the Transport.
Let me do fixes 1 & 2 and then test play.

thinking
Wait, `audioReady` is declared with `var` later in the file but hoisted — fine (undefined initially → falsy, so scope skipped until ready). Now test: reload, click a pad, screenshot, then click Play and check motion/status.

thinking
Layout looks good. MIDI fixed. Now the 27 AudioContext warnings at load — these are concerning. They likely come from Tone.Reverb's OfflineContext rendering (each OfflineContext creation triggers a warning? no...). Actually in Tone v14, `OfflineContext` creates a real `AudioContext` as a "dummy" context (`this._context = new Context(new OfflineAudioContext(...))`) — Chrome warns for OfflineAudioContext? The warning text is about AudioContext autoplay. Hmm. Wait: Tone v14's `Tone.Offline` / OfflineContext... The Reverb generate uses `Offline(fn, duration, channels)` → `new OfflineContext(...)`. In Tone 14.8 OfflineContext constructor: `super(new OfflineAudioContext(...))`? It might also create a `ToneContext`. Chrome's warning "The AudioContext was not allowed to start" applies to AudioContext, not OfflineAudioContext. Alternatively the warnings come from the many `new Tone.Gain/Filter/PolySynth/FMSynth/Reverb/Limiter/Waveform` nodes — each node creation calls `Tone.getContext()` which... `getContext()` creates the singleton once. But `Tone.getContext()` in v14: `const context = new Context(...)`? Only once. Hmm, maybe the warning is emitted once per `resume()` attempt. Or maybe each `new Tone.Frequency()`? No, Frequency doesn't touch context. Let me count: 27 warnings. Suspicious: PolySynth with maxPolyphony 12 creates 12 FMSynth voices → each voice creates oscillators/envelopes → each node creation might call `Tone.getContext()` → context creation warning? If the singleton exists, no new context. Unless... Tone v14's `getContext()` — the "Tone.js v14.8.49" log printed once, so only one context was created. Chrome logs the warning each time an AudioContext is in "suspended due to autoplay" state and something calls `context.resume()` or when a source starts. Actually the warning is logged when an AudioContext is created in suspended state due to autoplay policy... once per context. But it can also be logged repeatedly when nodes are created on a suspended context? Hmm. I bet these warnings come from the repeated `Tone.getContext().currentTime` reads? No. Another possibility: my rAF `drawScope` returns early now (audioReady false) — but the warnings existed before too... they were 28 before, now 27. So it's not the rAF loop (it would grow). Actually the reload snapshot happens right after load; the loop runs ~60fps, so if it were the loop we'd see far more. So these are one-time-ish node creation warnings. Fine — they're warnings, not errors, and they're expected pre-gesture. The one real error: worker CSP (Tone's Transport worker clock). Tone catches it and falls back to a timeout clock. Let me check the fallback interval to see if the Transport will be usable. Let me grep for the WorkerTransport construction and updateInterval default.
{"command":"cd /tmp/job-gOPTTN && grep -o \"_updateInterval=[^,;]\\{0,40\\}\" tone.min.js | head; echo ---; grep -o \".\\{200\\}_createClock_updateInterval=Math.max(t --- ateObjectURL(t),s=new Worker(e);s.onmessage=this._callback.bind(this),this._worker=s}_createTimeout(){this._timeout=setTimeout((()=>{this._createTimeout(),this._callback()}),1e3*this._updateInterval)}_createClock(){if("worker"===this._type)try{this._createWorker()}catch(t){this._type="timeout",this._createClock()}else"timeout"===this._type&&this._createTimeout()}_disposeClock(){this._timeout&&clearTimeout(this._timeout),this._worker&&(this._worker.terminate(),this._worker.onmessage=null)}get updateInterval(){return this._updateInterval}set updateInterval(t){var e;this._updateInterval=Math.max(t,this._minimumUpdateInterval),"worker"===this._type&&(null===(e=this._worker)||void 0===e||e.postMessage(1e3*this._updateInte
thinking
The worker creation error is caught (`_createWorker` throws? Actually the CSP violation for `new Worker(blobURL)` — does it throw synchronously? In Chrome, `new Worker()` with CSP-blocked URL throws a SecurityError synchronously? The console shows an error message; the constructor may throw → caught → fallback to timeout clock. But note: `_createWorker` is called inside `_createClock` with try/catch only when `this._type === "worker"`. Good. However, if the CSP error is thrown asynchronously (not caught), the clock never ticks. Let me check `_minimumUpdateInterval` and what the Transport sets. Let's grep for where the transport's worker is created and its updateInterval. Rather than reverse-engineering, empirically test: click Play and observe the status text over time (motion frames). If steps advance, the transport works. Let me click Play and take motion frames.

Play was pressed: status "Playing · 5 notes · 112 BPM", tempo slider moved (because my click at x=166,y=122 hit the play button — the slider position changed? Actually the slider thumb appears at ~475 now vs 670 before... wait the layout shifted because status text pushed the scope. The slider looks narrower. Fine.) Hmm, wait: the play button is highlighted (on). Good. But no pad is active yet in this frame. Let me capture motion frames to see if steps advance (i.e., whether the transport clock works without the worker).

thinking
Problem confirmed: the arpeggiator is NOT stepping. Status stays "Playing · 5 notes · 112 BPM" for 1.7s+, no pad highlights, no step counter updates. The Tone.Transport clock is dead because the worker was CSP-blocked and the timeout fallback apparently never fires (or `_createWorker` doesn't throw synchronously — the CSP error is thrown asynchronously as an uncaught error, so the catch never runs and no fallback clock is created).
Also note the LED is on (cyan) — that's just from playing state.
So I must implement my own scheduler instead of relying on Tone.Transport. I'll write a lookahead scheduler using the Tone context clock (`Tone.getContext().currentTime` + `lookAhead`) driven by `setInterval` (a plain timer, no worker). This is robust.
Design:
- `schedTimer` = setInterval(tick, 25ms) — created once at play; cleared at stop. Guard: if already playing, do nothing (no overlapping schedulers). Also keep a single `tickFn`.
- `nextStepTime` in context time. On play: `nextStepTime = Tone.now() + 0.06`.
- tick(): while (nextStepTime < ctx.currentTime + ctx.lookAhead + 0.1) { scheduleStep(nextStepTime); nextStepTime += stepSeconds(); }
- Guard against runaway: if the tab was backgrounded, catch up by skipping: if nextStepTime < ctx.currentTime - 0.5 → nextStepTime = ctx.currentTime + lookAhead.
- stepSeconds() reads current bpm each iteration → live tempo changes.
- Use `Tone.Draw.schedule(cb, time)` for visuals — Tone.Draw works with the context time, independent of the transport. Good.
- Notes: `voice.triggerAttackRelease(note, dur, time)` where time is context time — Tone's `triggerAttackRelease(note, duration, time, velocity)` uses context time. Good.
I should keep the "Transport"-ish naming but implement it manually. Also mention in the footer? Not needed.
Also should I still use Tone.Transport? No — remove it to avoid the dead clock. But the requirement "Repeated Play must not create overlapping schedulers" — with my own interval, guard with `playing` flag and clearing the interval.
Let me also handle: what if the AudioContext is suspended (gesture failed)? Then `ctx.currentTime` doesn't advance and the while loop would spin forever? No: if currentTime is frozen, nextStepTime advances past the threshold and the loop exits. Fine. But notes would all be scheduled at once... Let's compute: initial nextStepTime = now+0.06; loop condition: nextStepTime < now + lookAhead + 0.1 → schedules maybe 2-3 steps then stops. If context is frozen, those never play. Acceptable; but add a safety: cap steps per tick (e.g., 8) and detect frozen context (if ctx.currentTime hasn't advanced in >1s while playing, show status warning).
Let me now rewrite the scheduler section.
Also the reverb: is it working? The scope shows a flat line — but with no notes playing, that's expected. I'll verify after fixing the scheduler: watch the scope in motion frames — if notes play, we should see waveform activity. Also check whether `send.gain` ramped (reverb ready). I can display a reverb status in the engine badge: "reverb: 2.8s IR ready" vs "generating…". Let me add that to the status/DOM for verification.
Additionally, since Tone.Reverb's offline render may also be affected by CSP/worker? It uses OfflineAudioContext (no worker). But OfflineContext in Tone v14 might use `Tone.getContext()`... Let me add a DOM indicator `#revStat`.
Let me implement the changes.Confirmed a real problem: Tone v14's Transport clock needs an AudioWorklet/Worker, which the sandbox CSP blocks (`worker-src 'none'`), so no steps fire. I'll replace it with my own context-clock lookahead scheduler.

thinking
Rather than editing many lines, I'll rewrite the whole scheduler + transport + boot sections. Let me read the relevant chunk to make precise edits.
I'll do targeted edits:
1. State vars: replace `var repeatId = null;` with scheduler vars.
2. `bpmValue`/`stepSeconds`: use local `bpm` variable instead of Tone.Transport.
3. `ensureScheduler`/`arpStep`: replace with lookahead scheduler.
4. `play`/`stop`: use scheduler start/stop.
5. bpm input handler: set local bpm.
6. boot: remove Tone.Transport lines.
Let me write the new code. Keep it clean: I'll introduce `var bpm = 112;` and `function bpmValue(){ return bpm; }`.
Scheduler code:
```js
/* ------------------------------------------------------------------ *
* Arpeggiator — a lookahead scheduler on the Tone.js audio clock.
* (Tone v14's Transport drives its timeline from an AudioWorklet
* worker; this scheduler uses plain context time so it works in
* sandboxed pages where workers are blocked by CSP.)
* ------------------------------------------------------------------ */
var timerId = null, nextStepTime = 0, stepCount = 0;
function ctx(){ return Tone.getContext(); }
function ensureScheduler(){
if (timerId !== null) return false; // already running -> no overlap
nextStepTime = ctx().currentTime + ctx().lookAhead + 0.06;
timerId = setInterval(pump, 20);
return true;
}
function haltScheduler(){
if (timerId !== null){ clearInterval(timerId); timerId = null; }
}
function pump(){
var c = ctx(), now = c.currentTime, la = c.lookAhead || 0.1;
if (nextStepTime < now - 0.4) nextStepTime = now + la; // recover from tab throttling
var budget = 0;
while (nextStepTime < now + la + 0.12 && budget++ < 8){
arpStep(nextStepTime);
nextStepTime += stepSeconds();
}
}
```
Note: `ctx().lookAhead` — Tone's Context has `lookAhead` property (default 0.1). Also `Tone.now()` = currentTime + lookAhead. I'll use Tone.now() for the initial value.
arpStep stays mostly the same but uses `time` as context time. `Tone.Draw.schedule(cb, time)` — Draw expects a context time. Good.
Also for the "empty selection" case, we still advance time (no notes). Good.
Stop: haltScheduler + playing=false. Already-scheduled notes within lookahead window (~0.2s) still play — that's fine ("prevents new arpeggiator notes"). Actually, to be strict, on stop I could also cancel the scheduled-but-not-yet-audible notes... but spec says allow tails. Keep.
Also add a frozen-context watchdog: track `lastNow`; if playing and now hasn't advanced for > 1.5s → status "audio context suspended". Simple: in pump, if `c.state !== 'running'` show status occasionally. Let me add: if (c.state !== "running") { setStatus("Audio context is " + c.state + " — click Play again."); } — but that could spam. Only update status text if changed. I'll add a small check that sets a flag.
Let me also display reverb readiness in the engine badge.
Now edits.{"path":"/tmp/job-gOPTTN/index.html","offset":290,"limit":30}}); }); var BY_ID = {}; PADS.forEach(function(p){ BY_ID[p.id] = p; }); /* ------------------------------------------------------------------ * * State * ------------------------------------------------------------------ */ var selected = {}; // id -> true ["C4", "E4", "G4", "D5", "G5"].forEach(function(id){ selected[id] = true; }); var playing = false; var stepIndex = 0; var repeatId = null; var notesFired = 0; var lastNote = null; /* ------------------------------------------------------------------ * * Audio graph: FM pad voice -> filter -> (dry + reverb send) -> limiter * ------------------------------------------------------------------ */ var limiter, master, dry, send, filter, voice, reverb, wave; function buildAudio(){ master = new Tone.Gain(0.9); limiter = new Tone.Limiter(-3).toDestination(); master.connect(limiter); filter = new Tone.Filter({ type:"lowpass", frequency:3400, Q:0.6, rolloff:-12 }); voice = new Tone.PolySynth(Tone.FMSynth, { maxPolyphony: 12, [428 more lines in file. thinking
Let me apply the edits now.
{"edits":[{"newText":" var playing = false;\n var stepIndex = 0;\n var bpm = 112;\n var notesFired = 0;\n var lastNote = null;Successfully replaced 6 block(s) in /tmp/job-gOPTTN/index.html.
thinking
Now issues:
1. `ensureScheduler()` return value & play() ordering: in play() I call `ensureScheduler()` before setting playing = true? Let me check the play function:
```js
ensureScheduler();
var seq = sequence();
...
playing = true;
ensureScheduler(); // <- I replaced Tone.Transport.start with this, so now ensureScheduler is called twice
```
Wait, the original play() had `ensureScheduler();` before `var seq = ...`. And I replaced `Tone.Transport.start("+0.04")` with `ensureScheduler()` — duplicate. Let me look and fix.
2. `repeatId = null;` in stop() — leftover reference to removed var; harmless but let me clean.

Fix play(): remove duplicate ensureScheduler, and set playing=true before ensureScheduler (so pump's arpStep works). Also `startAudio` uses async callback — the user gesture happens on click; `Tone.start()` returns a promise, and the callback runs in a microtask after await — that's still within the gesture-initiated task chain for Chrome's autoplay policy (resume() called from a promise callback of a gesture-initiated call is generally allowed). Tone.start() internally calls context.resume() anyway. Also `stop()` cleanup of `repeatId`. Also add reverb indicator. And in `startAudio`, after ready, update status/engine badge with context state. Let me apply edits.

Note: `setRevStat` is called from buildAudio which runs at boot — but `statusEl`/`setRevStat` are function declarations? `setRevStat` is a function declaration → hoisted, fine. But `document.getElementById("revStat")` exists in DOM since script is at the end of body. Good.
Also `setStatus` is used in `logError` before assignment — setStatus is a function declaration, hoisted. Fine.

The reverb IR generated successfully ("reverb 2.8 s tail · live") even though the AudioContext is suspended — good, OfflineContext works.
The worker CSP error still appears at load — that's Tone creating its Transport worker singleton when `Tone.getContext()`/`Tone.now()` is touched? Actually it happens at library init (Tone creates the global Transport lazily... in v14, `Tone.Transport` is a getter; the worker error appears at load even though I no longer touch Transport. Hmm — it might be created by `Tone.getContext()`? Tone's Context creates a `Worker`? No... Let me check: in v14, `Tone.getContext()` → `new Context()` → `this._idleTimeout`? Hmm. Or maybe `Tone.now()` at boot... The error occurs before my code? The console order: Tone log, then worker error, then AudioContext warnings. My code runs after the library loads. So the worker error likely comes from my `buildAudio()` → creating nodes → `Tone.getContext()` → context creation → in v14 `Context` constructor creates `this._clock = new ToneClock`? Hmm, no. Actually in Tone v14, `Tone.getContext()` creates a `Context` whose constructor calls `createWorker()` for `TransportWorker`? Let me grep: `TransportWorker` in v14 is created by the `Transport` (getTransport() singleton) — and `Tone.getContext()` doesn't. But `Tone.now()` → `getContext().now` — no worker.
Maybe `Tone.Draw`/`getDraw()`? Or `Tone.Offline`? The Reverb generation uses OfflineContext which may create a `Transport`? Hmm.
Whatever the source, it's an internal Tone fallback and doesn't break anything now (my scheduler doesn't depend on it). It's a console error though, and the verification asks to "inspect the console for audio-initialization or scheduling errors". This error is Tone-internal (worker clock blocked by sandbox CSP) and unrelated to my app's scheduling. Can I avoid it? If it's triggered by creating the global Transport, I could avoid touching anything that instantiates it. Let me find what triggers it: test by checking whether the error appears before or after my script by adding a console.log marker... Simpler: grep the bundle for what instantiates the Worker class.
The Worker class in Tone v14 is used by: `ToneClock`? No — Tone v14's `Clock` uses `Tone.getContext().createAnalyser`? Hmm. Let me grep for "new WorkerClass" / usage pattern `new ` + the class. Let me search for the string "tick" postMessage usage sites: `s.onmessage=this._callback.bind(this),this._worker=s` is inside `_createWorker`. Who constructs it? Search for `Worker(` patterns.
Let me grep for `new ` followed by the minified class name. I need to find the class name. Search for `minimumUpdateInterval` to find the class definition and its references.
Alternatively, I can test empirically: comment out buildAudio and see if the error persists... that's a lot of churn. Let me just grep quickly.{"command":"cd /tmp/job-gOPTTN && grep -o \"class[^{]\\{0,30\\}Worker\\|_minimumUpdateInterval=[^,;]\\{0,30\\}\\|new [A-Za-z_$]\\{1,3\\}((\\t,e) t,e t,e s,n) t,e e,i s,t t,e e,i s,t t,e) e,t t,e s,s e,t t,e e,i t,o e,s n,i) === who extends Worker ===
thinking
Not productive. Let me instead determine empirically whether the worker error comes from Tone's global Transport being instantiated by something in my code, by checking if the error appears in a page that only loads tone.min.js. I can create a minimal test file /tmp/probe.html with just the script tag and inspect console. Actually, more useful: does the error appear even with just loading the library? If yes, it's unavoidable (library init) and I can note it. Let me probe.

Confirmed: the worker CSP error and the AudioContext warnings come from loading tone.min.js alone (Tone's module init creates the global Transport worker). So it's library-internal, not my app's scheduling. Nothing I can do about it (it's Tone's fallback clock creation). My app doesn't depend on the Transport. Note: only 2 AudioContext warnings in the probe vs 27 in my app. So my app does create more contexts/warnings — probably from Tone.Reverb's OfflineContext render (creates contexts). Not an error. Hmm, but 25 extra warnings... Each `new Tone.Gain()` etc. calls `Tone.getContext()` which returns the singleton. But `Tone.now()`? Hmm. Actually maybe the repeated warnings come from `Tone.getContext().resume()`? No, we don't call it at load. Wait — the warnings appear at load in my app (before gesture). What runs at load: buildGrid, buildAudio (creates ~20 nodes + Reverb offline render), Tone.Frequency (10 calls, no context). The OfflineContext in Tone v14 creates a `ToneContext`-like wrapper around an OfflineAudioContext — and OfflineAudioContext creation triggers the Chrome warning "The AudioContext was not allowed to start"? Unlikely. Hmm, Tone v14's OfflineContext constructor: `super(new OfflineAudioContext(...))` and also `Tone.getContext()` for the "dummyContext" (`ToneDummyContext` — a Gain node created on the base context). Only once. Whatever: they're warnings, not errors, and they don't affect function. After the gesture they should stop. Let me restore the real index and continue testing. Actually one thing worth checking: whether these warnings keep accumulating every second during playback (which would indicate a leak). I'll check after clicking play — the console snapshot in motion frames will show. Restore index.html.

Pad click works: C4 pad is lit cyan (active feedback), status updated, and importantly the AudioContext resumed (no new warnings after the click, and the click triggered Tone.start). Note: the SEQ toggle for C4 is right below the pad — clicking the pad didn't toggle the SEQ. Good. Now test the arpeggiator: click Play (x≈140,y≈170 in current layout) then motion frames. Play button center: from screenshot ~ (140, 170).

The arpeggiator now works: steps advance C4 → E4 → G4 → D5 → G5, pads light up, chips highlight, note counter increments (27→29→32→35). Wait, notesFired jumped from 27 to 29 in 635ms — that's 2 steps at 268ms/step ≈ correct. And 36 notes at the end. Good. Hmm, one thing: at 112 BPM, 8th = 268ms, and frames show ~2-3 steps per 635-750ms. Correct. But the scope canvas appears flat/empty — the waveform isn't rendering. The line at h/2 shows the mid line (I draw a dark midline). The gradient stroke of the signal seems missing. Possibly `wave.getValues()` returns values in dB-ish range [-1, 1]? Tone's Waveform returns values normalized... In v14, `Waveform.getValues()` returns Float32Array of values from the analyser using `getValue` → for "fft" it's dB; for waveform it's -1..1? Hmm, Tone's Waveform with `size` returns values in range... In Tone v14 `Waveform` extends `Analyser` with type "waveform" and returns raw float data (-1..1)? Actually Tone's Analyser.getValue uses `getFloatTimeDomainData` → range -1..1. So it should show. But maybe the master gain isn't connected to wave properly, or the reverb IR is loud... Let me check: master.connect(wave) — Waveform is a node with input; connecting a Gain to an Analyser-based Tone node should work (Analyser has `input`). Hmm, maybe the values are there but tiny (amp = h*0.42 = 17.6px). The screenshot shows a thin flat line with a slight gradient at the right edge (pinkish). Hard to tell. The waveform may be flat because `voice.volume.value = -6` and gain 0.9 → amplitude maybe 0.3 → should be visible at ±5px. Also the drawing loop: `vals[Math.floor(i/w*n)]` with n=512, w=220 → fine. Actually notice in the last frame the scope shows a faint line slightly above middle on the right side. It's probably rendering but with a very small amplitude... Also, the canvas is only 42px tall with device pixel ratio 1 — fine. Wait, there might be a real issue: `wave.getValues()` in Tone v14 returns `this._analyser.getValue()` which for Waveform returns the "waveform" data normalized to [-1,1] but Tone's Analyser.getValue for type "waveform" uses `getByteTimeDomainData`?? Hmm, in v14 `Analyser.getValue()` calls `this.type === "fft" ? getFrequencyData : getWaveform`... Let me not dig; instead make the scope more robust: scale values with a gain factor and handle dB-like values. Let me check the actual range: if values were 0..255 (byte data), then y = h/2 + v*amp would be way off-canvas (huge) → the line would be clipped at the bottom, and we'd see a flat line at the bottom edge. We see a line near the middle → suggests values near 0 (either silent or normalized small). Possibly the audio is silent?! The status shows notes firing. But is audio actually audible? In headless Chrome, audio may be muted but the graph still processes (currentTime advances). The Web Audio graph in headless Chrome does run. Hmm, but the fact that the AudioContext warnings stopped after the click suggests the context resumed. Let me test the scope more sensitively: normalize by max abs value (auto-gain) so it always shows something, and also display a peak-level meter numerically in the status. Actually better: add a small "peak" readout to verify signal flow. I can compute peak from wave values and show as a bar. If the peak stays 0, there's no signal (a real problem to fix). Let me add: in drawScope, compute max abs; store in `scopePeak`; display in the engine badge or a small text near the scope: e.g. status? Better: add a tiny level meter element `#level` showing "lvl 0.42". Then I can verify signal via DOM text. Let me implement: a `<span class="lvl" id="lvl">–</span>` next to the scope, updated ~10x/sec with the peak value. And normalize the drawing with a soft auto-gain. Also, another consideration: Tone v14's Waveform `getValues()` might need `wave.type = "waveform"` (default is "waveform" for Waveform class) — ok. Let me also double check the `Tone.Draw.schedule` visuals worked — yes, they did (pads light in sync). Now, remaining checks: 1. Change one selected note during playback → rail responds (test by clicking a SEQ toggle). 2. Change tempo during playback → step timing changes. 3. Stop → no new notes; console check. 4. Repeated Play → no overlap (status "Already playing"). 5. Empty selection → no new notes. Let me first add the level meter, then run the rest of the tests. Also the `notesFired` counter increments even for the manual pad click? No, only arp steps. Fine. Let me add the level readout.
Arpeggiator works now. Let me add a signal-level readout so I can verify audio is actually flowing (the scope looks flat).

I have limited time. Let me reload and do one combined verification pass: play, toggle a SEQ, change tempo, stop, and check console + level readout.

thinking
I need to wrap up the testing soon—I'll do a quick verification pass with the audio playing, toggle a sequencer, adjust the tempo, then stop it. Since each test takes time, I'll batch them together and check the level display and console output at the end.

Now click Play, then a pad, and check the level readout. Let me batch: click Play (140,170), then click a pad to make sound, then screenshot. Actually clicks are dependent (sequential), but I can issue them in one message as independent calls? They'd run in order presumably. Risky. Let me do: click Play, then motion (which shows level + stepping). Time is short — do it.

thinking
Arpeggiator stepping is solid. But "out 0.000" — the level meter reads zero, meaning `wave.getValues()` returns all zeros. Two possibilities: (a) no audio is actually flowing (headless Chrome without audio device may still process...), or (b) the Waveform analyser isn't wired right.
Note: notes fired 55→62 in 1.7s = ~7 notes/1.7s ≈ 4.1/s... hmm at 112 BPM eighth = 268ms → 3.73/s expected. 7 in 1765ms = 3.94/s. Close enough (frames are approximate).
The 0.000 level is suspicious. In Tone v14, `Waveform.getValues()` returns `this._analyser.getValue()` — the Analyser's `value` property. Tone's Analyser in v14 uses `getByteTimeDomainData` scaled to [-1,1]? Actually Tone's Analyser.getValue returns `this._analysis` which is filled by `getFloatTimeDomainData`... but there's a catch: Tone's Analyser only updates its internal array when `this.value` getter is accessed (it uses `this._analyser.getValue()` which calls `getByteTimeDomainData(this._value)` and maps to -1..1 by (v-128)/128). Should be non-zero if signal flows.
Key catch: Tone's Analyser requires `context.state === "running"` and it uses `rawTime` caching... Another catch: Tone v14's Analyser.getValue() returns values in dB?? For type "fft" yes, for waveform no.
Hmm — but also possible: the audio context is running but the destination is a null sink in headless Chrome... still processes graph. Analyser nodes do get data.
Another possibility: `master.connect(wave)` — Tone's Gain.connect(Waveform) works. But Waveform's input... fine.
Wait, maybe the issue is that my limiter is the last node before destination and the analyser is tapped off master (pre-limiter) — that's fine.
Could the actual problem be that the AudioContext is still suspended (state "suspended") — then currentTime freezes and my scheduler would stall... but notes ARE firing and the step counter advances, which requires `c.currentTime` to advance. So the context IS running. Therefore audio is flowing through the graph... unless the graph is broken (e.g., voice not connected).
Hmm, but if the graph were broken the PolySynth might throw. Let me reconsider: `new Tone.PolySynth(Tone.FMSynth, {...})` in v14 — signature is `PolySynth(voice, options)`; v14.8 might expect options as second arg — yes correct. `voice.connect(filter)` — fine.
One real possibility: In Tone v14, `Analyser` requires `this._analyser.fftSize` etc. and `getValues()` returns the array only if `Tone.Draw` ... no.
Alternatively — the `Waveform` analyser's `type` default is "fft" in v14! Let me check: `Waveform` constructor sets `super({context, channelCount:1})` and `this.type = "waveform"`? Actually `Analyser` has `this.type = "fft"` default, and `Waveform` sets `this.type = "waveform"` in constructor. Hmm, but there's a known v14 quirk: `Waveform.getValues()` returns values in range [-1,1] only when type is waveform.
Rather than debug blind, use a more robust approach: use `Tone.Meter` (getLevel) — or read the analyser directly via a raw Web Audio AnalyserNode created from the Tone context: `Tone.getContext().createAnalyser()`. Hmm.
Actually, simplest robust check: `Tone.Meter` → `meter.value` gives RMS level. But same Analyser machinery.
Time is nearly up (5 min). The level readout is a nice-to-have diagnostic, not required functionality. The required behaviors (pads play, active marking, arpeggiator, selection, tempo, stop) are verified. The scope being flat is cosmetic; but it might also indicate no audio... I can't fully rule that out. Let me spend one quick attempt: connect the Waveform to the limiter output as well and set `wave.type = "waveform"` explicitly, and also use `Tone.getContext().createAnalyser` fallback? Too risky/time-consuming.
Better quick fix: use `Tone.Meter` for the level (well-tested in v14: `new Tone.Meter(); meter.value` in dB or linear) and keep the Waveform for the scope. Actually if the Analyser mechanism is the problem, the Meter shares it.
Alternative: do the scope with a raw AnalyserNode created directly from the native context and connected to the Tone destination input:
```js
var raw = Tone.getContext().rawContext.createAnalyser();
raw.fftSize = 1024;
// connect from Tone node's raw output: limiter.connect(new Tone.Node?)
```
Hmm, Tone v14 nodes expose `.input`/`.output` as native nodes: `limiter.output` is the native DynamicsCompressorNode. And Tone's `Gain` output is a native GainNode. So I can do:
```js
var tap = Tone.getContext().createGain(); // Tone's createGain returns native GainNode in v14
limiter.connect(tap); // Tone's connect accepts native node? Tone v14 `connect(destination)` accepts ToneNode or AudioNode
tap.connect(rawAnalyser);
```
Tone v14's `ToneNode.connect(destination)` accepts `ToneNode | AudioNode | AudioParam`. Yes, it handles native AudioNode (checks instanceof AudioNode). And `Tone.getContext().createGain()` exists on the Context in v14 (createGain, createAnalyser, etc.).
Then read with `rawAnalyser.getFloatTimeDomainData(buf)`.
That's a small, safe change. Let me do it: replace `wave = new Tone.Waveform(512)` with a native analyser tap, and in drawScope use `getFloatTimeDomainData`.
Risk: if `Tone.getContext().createAnalyser` doesn't exist → wrap in try/catch and fall back to Tone.Waveform. Let me implement carefully but quickly.
Also: if the level is still 0 after this, it likely means headless Chrome really produces no audible signal (or the context is running with a silent sink) — the app logic remains correct. I'll note it as unverified audio output.
Let me implement the change now, reload, and check once.
I'll edit buildAudio's wave creation and drawScope's value fetch.
In buildAudio:
```js
wave = new Tone.Waveform(512);
master.connect(wave);
```
Replace with:
```js
// scope tap: prefer a native AnalyserNode (independent of Tone's analyser polling)
try {
var c = Tone.getContext();
wave = c.createAnalyser ? c.createAnalyser() : null;
if (wave){
wave.fftSize = 1024;
scopeBuf = new Float32Array(wave.fftSize);
var tap = c.createGain();
master.connect(tap);
tap.connect(wave);
}
} catch(e){ wave = null; }
if (!wave){ wave = new Tone.Waveform(512); master.connect(wave); }
```
And in drawScope:
```js
var vals;
if (scopeBuf && wave.getFloatTimeDomainData){ try{ wave.getFloatTimeDomainData(scopeBuf); }catch(e){} vals = scopeBuf; }
else { try { vals = wave.getValues(); } catch(e){ vals=[0]; } }
```
Need `scopeBuf` declared in outer scope. Let me add `var scopeBuf = null;` near the audio vars.
Do it.One diagnostic issue: the level meter reads 0. Let me tap a native analyser instead of Tone's polling analyser.
{"edits":[{"newText":" var limiter, master, dry, send, filter, voice, reverb, wave, scopeBuf = null;","oldText":" var limiter, master, drySuccessfully replaced 3 block(s) in /tmp/job-gOPTTN/index.html.
thinking
`vals` is declared with `var vals = scopeBuf;` then later `var n = vals.length || 1` — if scopeBuf is null and wave.getValues fails... fine. Now reload, click Play, and check level. Time is short: do reload + click play + one motion frame.

Now click Play then a pad, and check the level. I'll click play (140,170) then immediately a pad (220,520) — but the SEQ toggle is below; the pad C4 is at y≈520. Then screenshot. Actually to save a step: click Play, then take a motion snapshot; the level should read >0 during playback.

Level still 0.000 immediately after play (no note yet fired at that instant — plausible). I'm out of time for more diagnostics. The safest move: make the level meter not misleading, and finish. Given the time constraint, I'll do one quick check with a screenshot after ~1s of playback... Actually I can combine: click a pad (which fires a note immediately) and then screenshot in the same response? The click returns a DOM snapshot which includes "out X". Let me do that one call — it's fast and it's the decisive test of whether audio flows.

`out 0.137` — real audio signal is flowing through the synth graph (the earlier 0.000 was Tone's Waveform polling problem, now fixed with the native analyser tap). Also note the arpeggiator is stepping (34 notes, D5/E5 pads lit). Time is essentially up. The file is saved. Let me do a final syntax sanity check (already OK) and stop. Actually the last edit was validated? Let me quickly run node --check once more and finish. Note: I couldn't explicitly test tempo change / selection change / stop / empty selection in this session, but earlier verified selection-driven rail changes are wired; I verified stepping and audio. Let me do one final quick check of the file and finish with the report.

grep -c returned 0 matches → exit code 1 (no "http" strings) — that's good: no external URLs. Final: click Stop to verify stop behavior quickly? I'm at the time limit. Let me do one fast stop check since it's a required verification item and cheap.

Stop works: status "Stopped — tails still decaying. 127 arpeggio notes played", STOP button highlighted red, PLAY back to normal, and the scope shows a live decaying waveform (out 0.043 with the tail still ringing) — confirming tails decay after stop. The rail is back to non-armed display. Note: the status text still shows a stale "Playing · step 2/5..." — no wait, the status shows "Stopped — tails still decaying". The DOM text snapshot showed "Playing · step 2/5 · E4 @ 112 BPM · 127 notes" because the snapshot was taken at the moment of the click before the last Draw callback... Actually the screenshot shows "Stopped — tails still decaying. 127 arpeggio notes played." Good. And no further note count increments after stop (screenshot at a later time shows 127 as well). I'm out of time. Final answer/report.
Final file saved at `/tmp/job-gOptTN/index.html` → `/tmp/job-gOPTTN/index.html`. ## What I built `index.html` (self-contained, no network/CDN; `tone.min.js` loaded by plain local `<script src>`): - **10 pads** = C-major pentatonic over two octaves (C4 D4 E4 G4 A4 / C5 D5 E5 G5 A5), each labeled with note, scale degree (1 2 3 5 6), Hz and MIDI number (derived via `Tone.Frequency`). - **Synth voice**: `Tone.PolySynth(Tone.FMSynth)` → lowpass `Tone.Filter` → dry `Gain` + send → `Tone.Reverb` (2.8 s generated IR) → `Gain` → `Tone.Limiter` → destination. Everything synthesized; no audio files. - **Per-pad SEQ toggle** is a separate button (`stopPropagation`) so arming never triggers a note; starts with a nonempty selection (C4, E4, G4, D5, G5). - **Arpeggiator**: selected notes in ascending pitch order, one per eighth-note step, plus a live "sequence rail" showing the ordered steps with the current one highlighted. - **Play / Stop / tempo slider 60–180 BPM**, an output level meter + oscilloscope, keyboard shortcuts, and a `window.pentaGrid` debug hook. ## Key bug found and fixed during verification Tone.js v14's `Transport` drives its timeline from an **AudioWorklet/Worker clock**, which the sandbox CSP blocks (`worker-src 'none'` → console error, and the fallback clock never ticked): the arpeggiator scheduled nothing at all. I replaced Transport use with a small **lookahead scheduler on the Tone audio clock** (`setInterval` pump + `Tone.now()`/`context.currentTime` + `Tone.Draw.schedule` for visuals); tempo and selection are re-read every step, so both apply live. I also switched the scope tap from `Tone.Waveform` polling to a native `AnalyserNode` (it read a flat 0 before) and fixed `Frequency.midi` → `toMidi()`. ## Verified in-browser - Pad click → pad lights cyan, status updates, audio graph active (`Tone.start()` on the gesture; context warnings stop after it). - Play → steps advance C4→E4→G4→D5→G5, pads and rail chips highlight in sync, note counter climbs (~3.7 notes/s at 112 BPM = eighth notes). - Stop → "Stopped — tails still decaying. 127 arpeggio notes played", no further notes, scope/meter still showing a decaying signal (tails preserved, no `releaseAll`). - Console: no app-generated audio-init or scheduling errors. The only error is Tone's own internal worker-clock creation blocked by the page CSP (reproduced with a page containing *only* `tone.min.js`), which my scheduler no longer depends on. ## Not fully verified (ran out of time) - Changing one SEQ toggle *while playing* and dragging the tempo slider mid-playback (the code paths are live-read each step and the rail re-renders on toggle — the toggle/rail update was exercised while stopped, not during a step boundary). - Empty-selection silence, `Clear all`/`Arm all`/`Alt every other` buttons, repeated-Play no-overlap guard, keyboard triggers, and actual audible sound (no audio device in the test browser; signal presence was confirmed via the output meter at 0.137 peak).
